Procedure for Using Airplane Mode?

You board a plane. They tell you to turn off all electronic devices. Once in flight, they tell you that you may now turn on approved electronic devices.

So how does using your phone in airplane mode fit into this? Do you turn it off when told, then turn it on when it's okay to and hurry and put it into airplane mode? Or do you put it into airplane mode, turn it off, turn it on, and it's still in airplane mode?

Or is simply putting it into airplane mode when told to turn it off enough?

I understand. But they ask you to turn off ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES. That means iPods, laptops, gameboys, etc. Then once in flight, you are told that "you may now turn on approved electronic devices."

I'm not a ra-****. ;)

Turn phone to Airplane Mode THEN turn it off.

When they tell you it's ok, turn it back on (it'll still be in airplane mode).

This. Or just put it into airplane mode and hope they don't search your poscket for an electronic device that is left on. I "accidentally" forgot to turn my GPSr (Garmin eTrex Legend HCx) off on a couple plane trips, and viewing the track in Google Earth with elevation on is kind of cool! We had a tailwind on the way home and we hit 599 MPH at one point. ZOOM!

I turn my TomTom on all the time, I especially like when my POI's show up at 500 to 600 mph!
Transatlantic flights are the best for speeds though!

You guys are making average passenger plane flights sounds more intense than they really are... you don't break the sound barrier and do crazy stuff like barrel rolls now. ;)

I usually run up and down the aisles making airplane noises while holding my arms outright.

I'll take pictures on my next cross country flight. :D

Kelmar, thanks! I thought that it might work that way. Good to know!

NYC, I think it's standard procedure for airlines to put me next to doped up crazy people!!!! And then loud, seat kicking people behind me. And screaming kid close by for good measure.

Hey, when you're stuck in an aluminum tube of germs and stuck in a cramped seat for hours, you need to do whatever you can to make the flight interesting!

In all seriousness though, I usually pull a juke out on the attendants. Airplane mode, hold the power button till the menu pops up, then they usually walk away. Home button, screen off, in my pants. Wait for the announcement, then back on with the screen and back to sonic or whatever I was playing.
