Profiles and Help!

Newbie
Hi,
I purchased Tasker awhile back and have been able to set up easy profiles but can't figure out how to set-up the home wifi profile.

I would like to disconnect 3g, enable wifi and disable pattern lock when I am home and connect to 3g, disable wifi and enable pattern lock when I leave home. I have Secure Settings installed. I have read posts in different forums but unfortunately (for newbie me!) the posts assume you know where to look for different options and I am not sure on some things. I think my biggest problem is that screen dim for a certain amount of time (how long I don't know?) needs to be added as part of the task but I don't know where that option is or where to put it. Can someone please give me a step by step on how to set this profile up? Would be much appreciated!

Thanks. :D

I'm pretty new to Tasker myself and am not sure about how to answer this... I'm sure that one of our members will be able to point you in the right direction! :)

I have a very similar profile but without the pattern lock.

I'll try and walk you through the the setup.

First off, just so everything within Tasker looks the same to everyone potentially involved, let's take it out of beginner mode.

Open Tasker
Tap options
In the UI tab UNCHECK beginner mode.

Now that's sorted.

On the profiles tab. Tap + for new. (there there are many many ways to achieve this profile, feel free to experiment with other triggers)
Name your new profile anything you like, but for now it'll be "wifi"
Tap State
Tap Phone
Tap Cell near
Tap Scan
Walk around your home until you get a few towers show up.
Tap BACK once only
Select New Task
Name the "wifi"
Tap +
Tap Net
Tap wifi
Set as On

Ok, leave that as one profile. This will in short, turn on your phone's wifi when the phone hits one of the cell tower signals near your home location.

Now ASSUMING that once wifi is turned on, you phone will automatically connect to your home wifi when in range, (ie the pass to your wifi is saved on your phone) you can do the
New profile.

Home wifi

Profiles tab, tap +
Name profile
Tap State
Tap Net
Tap wifi connected
Enter ssid/mac etc etc (you can click on the magnifying glass to lookup local SSID'S

Then tap back Once
Tap new Task
Name it
Tap Net
Tap mobile data
Set to off (or toggle)

... And any other settings you require. I set things like volume to half, auto sync on for 15 minutes, brightness down to low etc etc.

Hope this helps you out.

If you find the first wifi profile keeps dropping just keep scanning, for cell towers, I have about 15 on my list for my home location.

Hi,

Thank you so much for this information. I didn't see any exit tasks though. Don't you have the reverse happen when you leave your house? Also assuming I can find out somehow about disabling/enabling pattern lock, any suggestion as to where I would add that?

Thanks again. Really appreciate you sharing your profiles and walking me through the steps.

Hey, no problem.

Here's a tip, tasker is a clever lil app. If you create a profile, the contexts of that profile trigger the linked task. When the context is no longer met, the task REVERTS anything it did back to it's original state. So no need for an exit task. You use an exit task to perform 'different' functions to that as the original task.

Example.

Profile - wifi
#turns wifi on in the linked task. When the context is no longer met, wifi will automatically turn back off.
However
Add an exit task to turn 3G on, and wifi will turn off automatically, and 3G will turn on.

I hope that makes to you.

To add an exit task, goto your profiles tab, Tap the profile, it should expand to show the linked task. Long Tap on the linked task to get up a sub menu, tap on Add Exit Task. And either link an existing task or create a new one from there.

Thanks. Had no idea about the exit task. It probably says that somewhere but it didn't connect in my brain. Tasker is a bit overwhelming, at least for me. I will give this a shot and let you know how I make out.

Thanks again!!
