Programming inside an Android

I am waiting patiently (yeah right) for Android 3 to come out in order to get a good tablet.

The main reason I want a good powerful tablet with a good OS is the fact that I want to be able to program when I am outside, in buses, etc.

I can't ignore that fact that I haven't found a single result while googling about programming from INSIDE Android.

I want to be able to use C/C++, Java, or anything else (as long as it has OpenGL bindings) without coding on a PC.
Is there a way to do this? And if not, what's the big idea?

Thanks.

You're asking for a full gcc with cross-compilation ability on an embedded Linux - I like the way you think, no sarcasm.

Desire is the genesis of ambition, in turn is the genesis of invention.

I'd suggest maybe GDocs for an editor, as that would at least cloud things.

And I still use vi, IDEs are for sissies. :) ;)

I remember bootstrap building the entire gcc stack (and libraries) starting with a small C compiler. In theory, this can be accomplished.

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to compile things, or even make Android packs inside your Android. Especially with tablets becoming quite strong with Tegra 2, SnapDragon and such things.

Memory is no longer a problem either. Don't know about the full GCC, but MinGW with C, C++ and MSYS is 250 MB on my desktop.

And say they don't like you to compile to actual native code, why not give us access to the SDK?
I really can't get it.

Being able to program anywhere is the main reason I want a tablet.

Java could be possible because it is platform independent. You will never see programming in c/c#/c++ on an android device. just like you cant write c language programs on a mac.

Without rooting my phone (on 2.2.1), I am able to write, compile or interpret, run and debug in C, C++, Forth, TCL, javascript, basic, python, perl, bash, Beanshell, java, ruby, and a few dozen other languages.

You can use adb shell to make read/write/exec directories on your phone.
$ mkdir /data/local/bin
$ chmod 777 /data/local/bin

Use "Android terminal emulator" to install bash and busybox.

Use C4Droid to compile C if you can afford $1.50 -- move the compiled program "temp" out of /data/data/com.n0n3m4.droidc/files/ if you want to run it from a command line.

I have gcc and g++ too, but not going to try to tell you how here.

If you want Java, get JavaIDEdroid -- it has the eclipse java compiler and Beanshell for scripting. Can build apks from scratch. ("Terminal-IDE" claims to put all these tools together at 32meg -- I have not tried it).

Of course, the SL4A project (code.google.com/p/android-scripting) is the place for python (see also "Pygame subset for Android"), TCL, perl, ruby (see also Robutu.org), another Beanshell (see also AndShell), javascript via Rhino, Lua, squirrel, and a few others.

Then there are a bunch of Basics -- see "Basic!+SQL" for a full on compiler that can make market apps.

For functional languages there is Erlang, OCaml, etc.

and endless list....
