programs running in the background why

I have the lg thrill
How can i stop programs run in the background and kill my battery. For example gmail, nessenger, chrome, news. I didnt sign up for any of these but they still run. Why? How can i stop it

It is widely proclaimed that those apps are backgrounding for a specific reason and that task killers are a bad thing, all of which might be true, but I use one called Fast Reboot anyway, just to clear the brush.
