Root Proper Backup Procedure

I was getting ready to do a custom ROM installation and I read that I needed to do a Nandroid backup, which I did by using CWM. But I have a few questions...

After putting the custom ROM on there, are there going to be any extra steps involved?

Will I have to restore using CWM?

Will it delete everything on the phone and then I put it all back on through a CWM restore?

I'm gonna try to help from personal experience and proper instruction as was explained to me: first, if you already have contacts in your phone make sure you have each set to "Google sync" instead of "phone only unsynced" (edit if needed) that way when the new ROM is installed, all you need to do is sign into gmail/play store and all your contacts info automatically drops right into your phone. Next, install ROM correctly per developer instruction (Yes, it will delete everything on phone because you are overwriting the stock programming). Always wipe data/factory reset, then cache, dalvik cache prior to install. Sometimes gapps files and updates need installed. And some ROMs need another factory reset after gapps/updates (like Awesome Android for example)
As far as a restore is concerned, I believe THAT is mainly for return to stock ROM if you don't like the custom ROM. Hope that helps

Thanks a lot. This answers all the questions I had. I went ahead and installed the Awesome Android ROM and I'm sitting here staring at the Boost logo. I did some research beforehand and I'm assuming it's rebuilding the dalvik cache partition as I saw someone said on a post somewhere... How long does it usually take?

Umm... There shouldn't be ANY boost logo. Should be ZTE logo. If not, redo the factory reset, cache/dalvik wipe, ect... Before ROM install. Install ROM. Reboot phone. Let phone do a full start, then reboot into cwm, wipe cache/dalvik again then install gapps.zip. reboot phone through a full start. Then reboot phone into cwm again. Wipe cache/dalvik again then install update 2.zip. Reboot phone fully through a full start. Then reboot into cwm for last time and do a last factory reset (to make settings right) and full reboot. Enjoy ur Awesome Android ROM. Dalvik is usually done building by the end of a full startup

Okay. I'll be trying this today. I didn't think to do the factory reset before installing the ROM. I'll try this. Thanks a lot. I'll let you know later tonight if it worked.

Actually, I lied. I just tried the beginning again and there seems to be an issue. I keep getting the Boost logo. I can't seem to get rid of it... Any reason this might be happening? I did the factory reset from the settings menu, then let it do a full boot, then a data/cache/dalvik wipe with CWM, then rebooted. Then did another data/cache/dalvik wipe from CWM before actually installing the ROM. I still got the Boost logo so I'm not really sure what to do here. (Also, no rush. I have the Nandroid backup and I'm able to restore successfully, so my phone is functional until then)

I'm kind of confused with your first question, where did you put the awesome android rom??? it should be in the root of the sd-card.

Second question; all backups are store in sd-card/clockworkmod/backup folder.
You restore a backup when something went wrong with the phone or when you want to go back to a different rom or setup.

Third question; when you're restoring from a previous backup, your current setting will be replace (erase) with your backup configuration. So, if you like what you currently have, back it up before restoring.

There's no need at all for "factory reset or clear, format any cache" before restoring a backup.

(copied/pasted this from another tread)

Hopefully you've already downloaded the four zips that you need to install this rom.

1. AwesomeAndroid_RC-1.zip
2. AwesomeAndroid-Update1.zip
3. Awesome_Android-Update2.zip
4. gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip

This is what I did and it perfectly worked for me

Restart in cwm / factory reset / format cache partition / wipe dalvik cache.
Install zip from sd-card
Flashed them the same way as above, one after another without leaving the "install zip from sd-card" menu.
Now go to main menu and do "just" a "factory reset" again and restart.

You should now be enjoying the Awesome Android Rom!!!

OH MY GOD!!! I can't believe I was that dense... I was just installing the Update-2! WOW. Well, it's working now and I'm going through the process of restoring apps through Titanium... At least the problem is solved. Thanks for all the help. It works great and is super smooth. I'm loving it already.
