Protection?

I am definitely getting a case, preferably clear to show off the back, for this phone since the whole made of glass thing doesn't sit well with me. My question is who all plans on using a screen protector? I don't have one on my Evo 3D and there isn't a single scratch on the screen and the Nexus 4 has Gorilla Glass 2, but i'm just curious who is planning on using one and why.

Also, if anyone finds a case for sale, let me know. Can't find anything yet.

I won't be using a screen protector, I never do. But I'm ordering a Seidio innocase or whatever they have as soon as it's available. Same as any phone I buy. When I'm in the mood to go caseless, I just drop the case.

Man, I hate using a case... didn't use one on my i4, i4s, my Note(s), my S3...

So much money and man-hours spent on design, I feel it's my duty to show it off to the World.

That said, I understand the concern... glass is scary. But I feel like a 3.5" iPhone is the only phone that I could get away with using a case on because these Android flagships are already pushing the limit of being too big.

In the end, I guess the alleged "bumper" might suffice...

No cases for me, the only thing I do (and religiously) is keep it in a pocket on its own. Keys and wallet elsewhere!

I don't know what the big fuss is about the back being made of glass. I mean the front of these phones are made of the same glass as the back and most of us don't even use screen protectors. The front is just as vulnerable to drops as the back. I've dropped my phone a few times, (like I'm sure everyone has) and nothing happened.
I think this is a gorgeous looking phone and wouldn't want to be covering it up. Not to mention the added bulk a case adds.

I don't know what the big fuss is about the back being made of glass.

It's more fragile than other materials. A number of reviewers have also commented that the back gets scratched easily, so it's not Gorilla Glass. Plain glass isn't that easy to scratch, so I wonder either a) what these reviewers are doing to scratch the back of their phone, or b) just what the heck the back material is really made of. Sand can certainly scratch glass as can steel, but as long as you're not stuffing your phone in a pocket filled with sand or with your keys, it should be fine.

For what it's worth, I really don't care that the back is glass (or glass-like, etc.)

Edit: Android Police says the back is indeed Gorilla Glass, but I wonder how accurate that is. As above, Gorilla Glass is very difficult to scratch, so I still wonder what the "scratches" are that some reviewers are reporting on the rear. Either AP is wrong, or the reviewers are seeing things.

Gorilla glass doesn't mean indestructible.

It actually does scratch pretty easily. Fine particles like sand have absolutely no issues scratching the glass.

The problem is that many reviewers claimed their devices got scratched in the short time they had the device. If that many people managed to scratch their devices, some multiple times, in a few days what does that say for the rest of us who will have the phone 1+ years? Not too promising.

The main problem with the glass back is that you have to lay it down on one side or the other so the chance for scratches is obviously greater, the protruding camera on the Evo is the main reason for my having a case. Similar problem, how to set the phone down?

I don't like either screen protection (had none on a TX with Glass-backed digitizer, Nokia 5700, Nexus One and Samsung Galaxy Player 5) or Cases on the device. My preference is to keep the device naked, but to carry it in a leather holster on my belt.

I've ordered this for my Nexus 4:

Amazon.com: Krusell Hector 3XL Premium Leather Universal Case with Beltloops for SmartPhones with 4.3 / 4.8-inch Screen-Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

In ten years of handling these devices and carrying them with me everywhere, I have never had a major accident with one (I know, I'm just asking for it now ). My handheld computers are important tools for me and I handle them accordingly. ;)

Of course it's not indestructible, and I know it can and does scratch. I do wonder how people manage to do it with every day use, though. The screen on my Gorilla Glass-encased Photon with no screen protector is totally unblemished after nearly 18 months of use. I usually don't put it in a pocket with coins or keys, but it has happened. So I still wonder what these reviewers are doing (or what kind of bad luck they're having) that they can scratch a review unit within a week of use. From my personal experience with Gorilla Glass, I'm not concerned about scratching the N4.

same here on my Optimus M+. According to the box it has gorilla glass. I haven't had a screen protector on it for 5 months and it goes into my pocket with my change and a pen. No scratches yet. It smudges, but I can clean out off pretty easily.

If you are concerned about laying it down and it getting scratched or as one review put it if you lay it on a smooth not level surface it could slide off, then maybe you should get 4 of the small rubber cushions like they use on stuff so they don't scratch tables and stick them to your phone.

Hows this for crazy?

Plenty more in the $600 range.

Edit - Image doesn't seem to be working. But it shows an N4 for $1000 on EBay.

Gorilla glass scratches. It can take a kicking from things like nails, but sand, oh god sand. I had my GNexus 1 week, put it in my pocket to drive to work. Got there, pulled it out to put it on silent and had a 1 inch scrape. Empty pocket. I was pissed. So I use a Skinomi screen protector. Not ideal, sure everyone like bareback, I get that, but I fear I will have to do the same here.
