Help PROXIMITY SENSOR

Hi folks! I have an LG Optimus F3 and was wondering what is the "Proximity Sensor" and what is it's function Any help is highly appreciated.

It's basic function is to turn off the screen when you're in a call and it senses that the phone is too close to your head to prevent accidental key presses.
Other apps can make use of it too for a variety of functions but it basically senses if something is around two inches from it.
Does that answer enough?
