[PSA] For those who own washing machines

Very good advice. Fortunately, I was home when I had the hot water supply break a number of years ago. It still took a few minutes to hear a noise from the laundry room. The scalding water did a lot of damage before detected. If we were away at the time... mercy me.

Yep, not a matter if "if" but of "when".

We had a hose go in out old house. Luckily the machine was in the basement. Our laundry now is right off the kitchen and could do some serious damage. We have one of those shut-off valves that the Mrs. religiously turns off when not in use.

Don't go for the cheap lines, ever. I had to replace the installers line from my dishwasher to my sink water line because he put some plastic crap on there. And, to make matters worse, used the weakest clamp I have ever seen. Get a worm drive clamp that is made in America if possible!

Yeah, ours has the single lever that shuts both lines off. We don't use it though. I do shut if off when we leave for vacations or something. I suppose we should turn it off between uses, but realistically, that ain't gonna happen.

In the UK a few years ago person upstairs from our apartment had that happen, washing machine hose burst. First thing we knew something was wrong, was when it started raining in our kitchen....not good!

In our apartment now the washing machine is in the bathroom, which is the norm in China. There's a stop valve on the hose outlet so always turn it off when not in use. Even if something were to happen, the bathroom has a sunken floor with a large drain, which is the convention for bathrooms here.

I think it is a great thing in asia.. the whole restroom is sunken floor .. with a huge main drain.

easy to clean!

I don't even want to know what you're doing in the bathroom.

My apartment flooding 2 weeks ago happened because a pipe burst in a laundry room. I think I posted pics in the tablet tavern.

I've never been in a place that has a laundry room, except maybe hotels. The bathroom is the "laundry room".

BTW our apartment got flooded out last year. I took some pics as well. Pipe burst on the "Made in China" communal heating system, and deposited about a hundred gallons of brown goop everywhere.
