Help public wi-fi security

I use a VPN for my laptop when at a public wi-fi hotspot. Is there something similar for Android? Should I be as security conscious with my android phone in the airport?
 
There are a few VPN clients out there, but they all require root access to your phone.

Rumor has it Donut is going to include VPN connections when it's out.
