You always need to be careful when using public wifi that isn't secured in any way, as anyone can access your device with the right knowledge. As long as it is the Android Market, then sure.

Consider using public wifi like having someone watch every keystroke you make and page you look at and making notes....so never look at or input anything you wouldn't be happy putting in public domain. I never access personal or work email, banking etc on public wifi, instead I use it only for passing time web surfing.
