If you are talking about ads, install an app like Addons Detector from the Play store. Once you do a scan, tap Addons and set the filter for Push Notifications. Delete any downloaded app that shows up in that list. It's the one pushing adds to your device.
If you are talking about text and Gmail notifications appearing in your notification bar you can stop them via it's respective app. Just open the app and look for Notifications in the settings menu.
