Quad-Cores or the Galaxy Nexus

All this talk of upcoming quadcore phones in Q1/Q2, is anyone thinking of holding off on the GNex and waiting for a quad phone?

Honestly, I don't know how much better they'll be initially so I probably won't wait, especially if the GNex comes to VZW in 32gb flavor.

Well, consider that the Nexus S was still arguably the best Android experience on the market until the Galaxy S II came out 6 or so months later, despite the dual-core Atrix and Optimus 2X launching hot on its heels.

I consider it a reasonable assumption that while Tegra 3 phones will be out in late-Q1 next year, there probably won't be a better Android phone than the Nexus for quite a while.

1 - There is ALWAYS going to be something better on the horizon. ALWAYS. When those quad core phone are released there will be something more absurd on the horizon with people asking if they should hold out. I will not be. Had my current phone almost 2 years, sitting on an upgrade, I'm going to use it.

2 - I don't even know how I'm going to use the processing power of 2 cores in a phone, much less 4. That's a f'ing lot. Tablet?? Maybe, if I could run MATLAB on it or something. But not a phone.

If waiting a week for news of release for the Galaxy Nexus feels like a year then waiting till end of quarter 2 at best will feel like half a lifetime away. I will take the Galaxy Nexus and it should last for another 2 years or so. That way I am not wasting my time debating on phone specs for another 6+ months.

Nvidia seems to lead in releasing dual, quad core processor devices in early part of year. But they get outclassed by Samsung, TI processors by summer. This happened this year with Tegra2, Exynos, OMAP4. So it looks like Tegra3 devices will come out first next year, but Sammy and TI will again outdo them with Quad core Exynos, OMAP5 processors by summer or fall.

Nexus S had short time span for its edge until Optimus 2X came, Atrix but it looks like Galaxy Nexus will have at least 6 months until quad core monsters with Sammy, TI processors come.

Do you want a great phone now or a great phone in 4 months?

But then when that phone is out we'll have leaks for the next great phone thats coming out 4 months after that.

So the question is really do you want a great phone now, a great phone in 4 months, or a great phone in 8 months.

but then there will be leaks for another great phone coming out 4 months after that, probably another nexus.

soooo great phone now, great phone in 4 months, great phone in 8 months, or great phone in 12 months.

My poor but beloved OG Droid has had her retirement extended long enough. Quads will come, yes. And I'll most certainly pick one up next year. But Nexus it is... just so I can place Droid into semi-retirement (standby in case the Nexus breaks). She deserves a rest.

Urgently.

Actually to come think about it when I purchased my Droid Incredible I remember the talk of dual core phones on the horizon. I have been happy with my Droid Incredible for the better part of 2 years. I will be fine with the Galaxy Nexus. No more waiting.... Till I am waiting to upgrade my Galaxy Nexus.

I'll get the Nexus now, and get a quad-core in 6-12 months if something catches my eye. If not, the Nexus will be plenty fast and powerful for the next year or two.

In the android world the next best thing will always be weeks or months away. Not 12 to 16 months like the iPhone. Had Verizon carried the Samsung Galaxy S2, I would have bought it and be done for 1.5 to 2 yrs. Since big red did not carry the SgS2, the Galaxy Nexus is now the phone I want for the next 18 to 24 months. No looking back.

You also have to consider that the first few quad core phones will most likely have more problems, kinks, battery issues, etc.... that will be improved over time with new phones where they have it more down to a science. The Nexus will probably be more than great until that time, and by that time you'll be eligible for an upgrade and you can feel a lot safer about doing it. I understand the appeal of being an early adopter, but I'd rather be a little patient and make a more informed decision.

I am so sick of waiting...

I'm not going to wait more just for a number. Current dual core phones are pretty darn snappy. Sure quad may become standard someday... but really... For the year of 2012, I want to USE my new phone, not spend all of another year 2012... WAITING for something newer to come out.

Tech is always like this you can never buy the newest, because by the time you buy yours, the newer is already years into development...

I assume they started working on designs for dual core cell cores back in early 2010, cell makers had to design a phone around that back in late 2010, then a carrier had to pick that phone, then ect ect... phones coming out now are OLD saddly :(

There's an article at the usually excellent ExtremeTech arguing that quad-core mobile is essentially a fraud, but IMHO the author isn't very astute.

He seems to believe in a current ideal of "one app core and one system core", totally ignoring that there may be many system threads ready to run at a given time. Plus there's no mention of contract duration -- for someone intending to keep a phone for 2+ years, it doesn't really matter how many apps take 100% advantage of the phone on day 1.

Also, one of the main benefits of a new quad-core chip isn't that there are two more usable cores over a dualie, it's simply that it's newer tech with newer power optimization strategies. So it may well be a better choice even in the absence of multi-threaded apps.

Anyway, just to put a marker down... I'd find the Edge appealing if it's available on VZW, but I don't think I'd wait another 4+ months when Nexus is already an outstanding phone.

I think it ask depends on your situation. I was thinking about switching to Verizon for the gnex from sprint, but now I may just wait for the quad core offerings. I have an evo 3d, and other than the screen the ICS the specs are basically a wash with the nexus. Now for someone that is currently sitting on an older phone and an upgrade, it's a no brainer to spring for the gnex, but for someone like me, waiting for bigger and better is something I can afford to do.

I have also been thinking about this and pondered getting a cheaper smart phone to hold me over till something really awesome comes out. But as others have stated, something even better is always just over the horizon and I am sick of waiting.

I'd still get the Nexus if it was single core. Quad core is pointless at this point on a phone. Dual core has been proven to not provide any benefit for the most part.

I'm not worried by quad core phones at all. We probably won't see any worthy one to get until Q3 next year. So Nexus it is now.

^^how is the 3d? is that a scam or does it actually work and look good?

It works pretty well actually. You have to hold it in the right spot to get the effect but it's easy to do and looks really cool. To be honest though I haven't used it much after the first couple weeks but the gameloft 3d games are awesome.

I would get a quad core phone if it ran a full blown OS, sorry but Android isn't there yet. Otherwise I'm not going to be doing anything intensive like playing Crisis on my phone. Though I think HTC will benefit from quad core due to their bloated Sense.

I'm still amaze how fast phone cpu power progresses. I'm already going to use my phone internet as my main ISP if it wasn't for throttling. At this rate, people soon will be using their phone as their main PC, with dockings.

I thought 4G wasn't throttled yet? I thought it was just 3G since their are far more phones on 3G then 4G right now.

Don't see the point in a quadcore phone anytime in the next couple of years. Just get a PSP Vita.

No offense, but I think you guys are missing the big picture. This quad-core is very likely to be faster and use less battery on the single- and dual-thread environments you already use. It doesn't matter whether you run apps with a zillion threads, the Tegra 3 is probably a better solution for you no matter what you're running right now!
