Hey guys,

we wanted to let you know about our first game for Android. It's called Quell, it's a highly polished, zen puzzle game that has been really well reviewed on iPhone, and we're hoping it'll be as well received by Android gamers.

In 2010, Quell was a critical success on iPhone and Palm Pre. It featured in the Appstore ’New & Noteworthy’ section, and on the Palm App Catalog it has been a permanent top 10 feature in the Games Chart, gaining high consumer reviews on both platforms. Fallen Tree Games is delighted to bring Quell to the Android!

Quell is planned for a June 2011 release.

This charming puzzle game features:

  • Over 70 levels of brain-bending logic
  • Original soundtrack by Steven Cravis
  • Beautifully crafted puzzles in hi-res
  • A perfectly balanced learning curve
  • Uniquely soothing and meditative game-play

Fall in love with Quell.

Hi all,

we wanted to let you know about our debut Android game...

'Quell' is a brain-bending game which features over 80 levels of addictive, lateral thinking puzzles, features a unique art style and a purpose-written soundtrack from renowned composer Steven Cravis. In 2010, Quell was released on iOS to great acclaim, receiving universally positive reviews, including an 8/10 from Eurogamer, and a 4.5 stars average on the Appstore. Soon after this, it was released on WebOS and become a favourite within the Palm community and a launch title for the newly released HP Touchpad.

Quell is available from the Android Market and the Amazon Appstore for Android at a special introductory price of $0.99. It supports all phones and tablets running Android 2.1 or higher.

Here's a gameplay video to give you an overview of Quell: YouTube - Quell announcement trailer

Yeah, this. I have to write a review of the game, so I need to install it, obviously... but it's not staying on my handset once I'm done, unless you add move to SD. I like the look of it, but 16mb of internal storage is unacceptable from any developer.

Great game, are you able to put in the option to install to SD card? my internal storage is at a premium! :p

Good call, guys. We're working on an update that addresses this issue (as well as some other minor UI changes). Should be available on Friday, I'll post again when it is.

Thanks for bringing it up.

Version 1.21 of Quell has been uploaded to the Android Market and the following fixes:

- Installation location (game can now be installed to SD card)
- UI (Buttons now behave consistently with Android standards)

Thanks for pointing this out, guys. We do appreciate it!

Cheers. It is appreciated - there's a few other things on the Market where the developers don't seem to have any intention of implementing it and, well, they're not getting any further money or whatever out of me that way...

I like the game, myself. The aesthetic's kind of a bit... weird? It may be simply personal taste but I don't feel the mood really works one hundred percent of the time. Other zen or stylised puzzlers, you can get an idea why the designers wanted them to look and sound the way they did and I don't feel Quell quite comes together like that - why a quaint cottage in the countryside? etc. It might be that your 'raindrop' clearly doesn't look like the rain going down the window, it might be the way the 'years' don't really seem to have anything to do with anything, I don't know.

Still, I do like it. It's a solid puzzle game I don't regret dropping pocket change on, and the mood works more than it doesn't - I wouldn't put it in the absolute top flight but I'm sure I'll carry on playing it and check out any future projects of yours, for what that's worth.

Amazing game. I wish more developers presented a beautiful, artistic game on every level. Outstanding price, would of paid 99c for the soundtrack. Really well balanced and stays interesting by adding new elements to keep you thinking. Also love that it keeps throwing new gameplay elements without staying on one thing to long until it becomes ridiculously difficult. I'm shocked to say that this game very well maybe Perfect and I'm not even a huge puzzle fan. Addictive trying to get perfect on each stage.

I've got nothing to add to that, except: people, don't be afraid to try out the game because there is no demo: the game doesn't download huge amounts of data after you've installed it, so you can start playing right away, meaning you have the entire 15 minute refund period to decide. Yes, half an hour would be better, as would an actual demo, but if you like these kinds of puzzles it should be plenty to make up your mind. I made up my mind after 3 levels :)

Quick response on this one :) Though when I first mentioned the install to SD option I didn't realize how low the footprint of this game was :) Still nice to be able to put it on the card for sure though! Love the game.

A few people had mentioned it on our Facebook page, and we take pride in our customer experiences, so it was something we wanted to address quickly.

Sorry if I'm dim. I've read everything I could find about this game, even the mini review above, and nothing describes what the heck you have to do. It's a puzzler. It has familiar game play. Use lateral thinking. Got it. So what is it similar to? What are the goals? How do you control it? What does one have to do?

The actual gameplay description is pretty short in the review :) :

Quell is one of those little gems that take an established game principle, in this case the maze genre (where you try to reach different points on a map, but neither you nor the objects you’ve pushed stop until they hit a wall) and makes it beautiful. (...) Quell tasks you with collecting multiple gems on a repeating (Pacman-style: go out the left, re-enter at the right) playfield with switches, walk-only-once fields, pushable boxes, deadly spikes, teleporters and so on and so forth.
You try to move your drop around so that it stops at positions from which you can reach the gems.

An example:
Look at this map (0 is your drop, which you control directly; X are solid blocks and * is what you're trying to collect):

Code:
| ^ <- Indicate
V | ->  movement
Code:
