Root Question about 3D switch

Where I am using Jellybean on my evo 3D I don't really have a need for the little 3D switch anymore. Would there be any way to script the button to work as a ringer silence/vibrate switch? like on the Iphone? that would be soooo cool lol

I was thinking a switch for the torch. Like on/off.

there are way more people on here that are far more talented than me. Maybe someone else can figure it out. If we can enable the capacitive buttons to wake our phones Then in theory it should be possible to use the 3D switch to do whatever you want

It was speculated in another thread regarding the use of both cameras that the switch likely enables the second camera for 3D purposes only. The question in that thread came up as the phone only uses the top camera when taking 2D shots. It was asked if the second camera could be used instead (perhaps if you get a scratch on the top lens, or the sensor gets some bad pixels...whatever your reason may be).

The notion was that the second camera isn't even enabled until that switch is flipped, so the implication was that the switch has the sole role of turning on the second camera and enabling 3D mode.

That doesn't mean it can't be re-programmed...I think it just means it will take aquite a bit of work, as that switch doesn't perhaps tap into any core part of Android...instead, it may physically enable the second camera and 3D picture mode.

As I move into JB ROMs, I'd like to have another purpose for that switch.

Isn't the buttons also bound to keys? I think they are F23 and F24 when I looked, I don't quite remember. I'll look again later.

I'm no developer, but couldn't you just make a service that does x or y when those keys are pressed?

The problem is that all the other keys are just momentary switches that the service listens for and can be mapped to different events, the 3d switch is a physical switch that enables or disables the 3d circuitry, there's no way to remap that.
OB

I was going to suggest this myself, it's a physical limitation that cant be worked around. Unless you just decide to jimmy-rig your phone physically and get it to perform some other task, in which case you'd be promoted to boss status in this thread and I'd suggest you just get 3D working on JB roms :p

I see. So no signal is sent to the operating system when that switch is, well, switched?
