Help Question about a power control icon?

What is the icon in the Android Power Control that looks like a refresh button? I can toggle on/off, but not sure what it does

That's the Sync icon.

So it does "refresh" the contacts, email, accounts if you will.

FYI, most of the functions on the Power Control widget are in the drop down Notification shade as well. I still use the PCW because I like to use the screen brightness toggle. I do like the Airplane mode toggle on the notification shade though.

So with Sync off the phone won't update email and other apps?
