Help question about battery life.

ok, so last week when I first got my phone, battery life seemed decent. I could get through half to 3/4 of a day. I am a heavy texter, both through the native text and whatsapp. I also do a lot of browsing. I hardly take calls, but my screen is on a lot. Now my question is, I work at a remote mine site for 14 days out of the month. When I am here, there is no cell service, just wifi. Since I came here on Tuesday, it seems as though my phone hates this place! Today I woke up, and doing my regular texting etc, I ate through 44% of my battery in one hour. Is there a way I could turn the cell service off completely while I'm out here? I'm guessing it constantly looking for a signal etc is eating me up.

Also, since I arrived here, it appears as though several of my apps do not push notifications to me at all. Gmail I have to manually check now, and I don't think Facebook is notifying me either. I know whatsapp does, but sometimes its delayed my 20 min or more. I'm coming from an iPhone so I'm just learning here, I gotta get this phone optimized! Thanks gang

Yes a very low / no signal area - if the cell radio is left on will hugely drain your battery.

You can simply put it into airplane mode. This will turn wifi off too, but you can actually turn that back on manually and everything else will remain in airplane mode.

yup, just figured that out. Thanks! I put it in flight mode, and we'll see how it goes.

Do you have any idea about the push notifications? Are some of these dependant on a cell connection? I know with my iPhone, all my notifications worked whether I was on cell or wifi.

I'm not even sure this is whats causing my problems at all, but the problem seems to have popped up as soon as I got to the mine. My gmail doesn't auto check at all now, I have to refresh manually whenever I open it up

So I'm guessing there is another reason my gmail stopped checking etc? I can't even find where it tells me how often it checks, and I can't find the push notifications settings anywhere.

Gmail doesn't check. It's push. Push means gmail listens to a signal from the gmail.com server. When an email arrives at gmail.com, it pushes the email to your phone. The application doesn't actively check the server as with the native samsung email client and most other clients would your web mail. That means there are no push settings. It is what it is and nothing to change.

If you turned accounts and sync off though (as per your other thread), you have effectively stopped Gmail communicating with the gmail server.

Accounts and sync basically gives the accounts the ability to sync with their online counterparts. If you want notifications from facebook or Gmail, these need to be on.
