Root Question about flashing roms or kernels

So this is the first time I have ever rooted a phone. I have root access and superuser but I did not get supercid. I am using clockwork mod. I am possible interested in flashing a kernel, maybe later a rom. First I have stock everything still, is it possible to flash a kernel to the stock rom? If so which one (the faux something one ok?) My phone is stock 2.3.4. My next question is if this is possible if I don't like the kernel how do I get back to the stock kernel? Does the nandroid backup I performed with clockwork mod restore that? I've read conflicting info on this. If I did later flash a rom it would be cm7. If I want to go back is my nandroid backup able to do this correctly? I've read too much about some rims having different radios and the nandroid backup won't get the radio back and flashing the correct radio later is a little more than I'm comfortable with at the moment. The whole radio and other firmware is why I'm not ready to try an ics rom yet. I just want to find a just a kernel for stock and try that first, then later maybe a whole rom but I want to be able to get back to stock easy (like just by using my nandroid backup) I've read sooooo much the past couple days on this I may be getting more confused. Is this as simple as I've stated? Also keep in mind I am not supercid. I know this is basic and some may think I should have found all these answers somewhere but I really want to make sure I know how to get back easy if I want to and some things I've read other places werent as clear as i would like. Thank you for any answers in advance!

First time can be really nerve racking, sitting there while your phone does stuff is kinda scary. Here is what will happen:

Nandroid Backups are a full ROM backup, that means:
Radios
ROMs
Kernels
User Data
Everything else you flashed.

I wouldn't alter the stock ROM, or kernel, but on most ROM's you can flash other kernels.

That is your fall back, do that first thing after you root. The combination I had a good experience with was a Virtuous Rom, find it on XDA, theres a few different ones, and then their Kernel that they throw in with it.

This can be a painless process, and you will get used to it, just always follow steps on forums and you'll be good.

Good luck,
Lucas

Ok excellent, thank you! Yeah after looking more last night I don't know about cm7, that virtuous one sounds more like what I'm looking for. So it said when I flash it to go into recovery, do a wipe data/factory reset. Is it good to clear the caches (dalvik cache). And to get back to stock rom do I do the wipe data/factory reset? Or is not not safe if not on the stock rom? For the room ate you talking version 2.3.3, that's what I found I hope it's the right one. Also not being supercid should create any problems returning to stock right? If I get comfortable with this I may just move into ics, it's just seems more complicated to do and get back to stock with the pics roms.

So I flashed a gingerbread rom. Pretty easy and I like it. Now my next question is the main reason I finally rooted was to try an ics rom but after my research saw it was a little more complicated than usual. Now that I've tried flashing a rom and it was easy and fine I'm thinking about it. I'm not supercid but I read of a way around that. My only question and worry is because when flashing an ics rom you have to flash additional separate firmware that I believe includes a radio as well so I'm assuming and worried that getting back to stock or even any other gingerbread room isn't as simple as flashing the nandroid backup or other gb rom. Is that correct? If so what else would I have to do to get back to a stock or other gb rom? I am especially curious knowing all the ics roms are still beta. Unfortunately I can't set up an xda account because tmobile ip address are blocked so it won't let me set up an account so I can't ask any of the ics rom devs.

For ICS 4.0.3 ROM's you will need the newest firmware located here. Be very careful please! You can find all types of the firmware on the second post of this thread. On that second post there is different carrier versions, what ever carrier you are pick the 3.24 version of it.

Once you have the newest firmware, you should still be able to flash older ROM's, but these ICS ROM's are amazing.

The ICS ROM I am using is: CM9 by TripNRaver

Definitely flash an ICS Rom. There's nothing else like them. I ran into, what I thought was a catastrophe. Got bootloops after flashing the firmware. Don't freak out over it. If it happens, just pull battery, pull sd card, put battery back in, boot to bootloader, go to recovery, put sd back in, mount USB storage to your computer (can't remember where it is in recover but you'll find it), delete that PNG image from your card, flash Rom and boom you got sum icecream sandwich
