Question About FoxFi Usage

Lurker
I am going on a roadtrip in about a week and wanted to use my laptop while in the car so I was wondering if FoxFi would work. It is working perfectly on my Droid Bionic and I am wondering if it will contribute to my data usage when I use it and if I go over the 2GB cap that Verizion gives to the $20 per month Mobile Hotspot is implemented there?

Please tell me anything you know, thankyou

Hmm, I wonder why you would even need FoxFi. Android can wifi tether by default already. Doesn't the default one work for you? I use mine a lot when I am on the road. Not for laptops, but other wifi capable devices. (like my whole family's phones)

Not all androids have wifi capability, depends on the phone and version android. Also some carriers require a separate tethering fee and when you open wifi tethering on your settings, it pops up saying you don't have a tether plan. Foxfi will work on both types of problems and does not require root. I did notice a problem with Foxfi on a recent trip from Florida to Alabama, I lot wifi on my tablet and I believe it was when I was on a separate data access and not on my At&t. I also noticed the data gone from my phone too. My guess is on the shared towers that some only share phone capability and not data. You would have to watch your data usage as 2gig is not much, could go over. Hope this helps.

The tethered usage with FoxFi doesn't go unaccounted for - it still counts toward your monthly usage; it just doesn't register as tethered usage.

I'm not clear on what you're asking regarding the Mobile Hotspot feature. Are you asking if it will be automatically added if you exceed your 2GB cap? I can't imagine why they would do that. According to this page, Mobile Data is excess of your cap is charged at $10/GB.
