Question about Google Voice and Verizon free unlimited minutes.

I couldn't find a thread addressing this problem well, so I apologize if this question has been asked, but I was wondering:

I have Verizon, but I use Google Voice. My boyfriend also uses Verizon, without Voice (if that's at all relevant), and he's allowed free unlimited minutes with anyone else who has Verizon. I was wondering if having him call my Google Voice number would still mean that he gets free unlimited minutes with me, since I also have Verizon, or not, since it's Google Voice.

Again, I apologize if this question is rather elementary, but I would appreciate any help.

No he would not. The call would not be considered as mobile to mobile. He'll have to your actual verizon number to take advantage of the unlimited verizon network minutes.

He can still call you on your original Verizon phone number. The call will go through to your phone just fine. If you don't answer, you can set it up for GVoice to handle the voice messaging (in other words you don't have to use the Verizon voice mail system). But it will count as a Verizon to Verizon call and therefore would be unlimited.

However, as stated earlier in the thread, if he calls your GVoice number it will not count as a cell phone to cell phone call, nor a Verizon to Verizon call.

Similarly, you can call him using your Verizon phone number instead of GVoice. There are options you can select concerning this (instead of using "always use GVoice" choose "Ask everytime I make a Call") in the GVoice application.

In other words, you don't have to exclusively use only GVoice or only Verizon Dialing. You can use both on the same phone.

There's a great app called Voice Choice that lets you set up an "never call these numbers using GV" list. Just leave the GV settings to "use for all calls", then add numbers like your boyfriend's to the app, and it'll intercept any outgoing call to his number and skip GV dialing. I think it also works the other way around if you want (i.e. you can create a list of numbers that will always use GV dialing), but it sounds like the former way is the best choice for your situation.
