so here's my situation. currently with tmobile. will switch to att soon..

i want to port my tmobile number go google voice.

i will be joining a family account with ATT, which has unlimited mobile to mobile calls and mobile to mobile texting.

if i use my google voice number as my main phone number.. do my mobile to mobile calls still count as mobile to mobile? and do my texts still count as mobile to mobile texts?

i have to figure this out before i port the tmobile number. if it doens't work out the way i want it to, i'd probably just port over to my att line.

I'm not sure about calls. I would say yes though, because the caller ID coming to your phone will be of your friend's mobile number. You could always add your GV number to your top 5 friends or whatever your carrier provides to choose a few numbers you would get free calls from and then have GV set to display your GV number as caller ID on incoming calls, making it look as though all your calls are from the same number. Obviously this wouldn't let you know who was calling though, so you may not want to do that.

If you use the Google Voice app to text and set text forwarding to off they won't count as texts at all, just data. Can't do MMS this way though, yet.

I would say if people call your GV number or you place a call using GV those would not count as mobile to mobile calls because they are not direct mobile to mobile. When you use GV to make a call, you're actually calling GV which is not a mobile number, it's a land number. GV then routes the call. When people call your GV number it's the same situation.

I've never used GV for texts but I'd guess the same thing would apply.

Why the change to AT&T? T-Mobile is much cheaper.

Calls are billed/counted based on the number that shows up on caller ID.
If people call your GV number and you have it set to show you GV number then they won't count as mobile to mobile. If you have it set up to show the actual number they will count as mobile to mobile.
Outgoing calls placed through GV will not count towards mobile to mobile.
SMS, if the GV app is used and set up to not forward to your mobile number, uses data so will never count towards your text plan.
There are a few ways to actually set up and use GV, and it can be coupled with other apps too. ex: I have my GV listed in my Friends and Family, I have it set to show the person's number when they call (so I don't have to guess who it may be) these are free mobile calls but not free 'regular' calls. I use Google Voice Callback so when I make outgoing calls to non-Verizon mobile numbers they are still free calls. There are other ways to set that app up too...it all depends how you want to use GV and what works for you.
