Apps Question about Hi-Quality Audio Recording

There are a number of stereo microphones available (from Belkin, Tascam, Blue, etc) that allow high-quality stereo recording on ipods and iphones. There are a number of apps available for recording on Android, but the quality of the recordings is not great. Why is that? Is there something inherent in the Android platform that does not permit hi quality recording? (please note - I am not a developer)
