question about internal memory/caches

So recently got a nexus 7 and i'm confused about internal memory and the cache in apps, here's what confuses me, internal memory says for example I've used 578 mbs, but when I empty a cache of an app instead of the amount of mb's I've used going down it goes up, is that right?

The way I understand it, Android dynamically manages cache so the situation you describe could happen. If clearing cache used by one app signals/allows another running process that it can use more it certainly will. If the cache amount you cleared is smaller then the cache the other process decides to use, the total amount being used will go up.
