Root Question about kernals

This is my first time posting ive ben lurking around the forums for a while and i don't wana sound like a noob but what are kernals? I'm rooted on JB i have cwm installed and everything so i kinda know about this stuff. But i would like to know what kernals are , how to install them etc etc. Thanks!

Regarding how to install them, normally they are packaged in cwm flashable zips. The thread author usually says how to install them so just follow the directions and you are good
