Question about mobile hot spot

I'm very new to this and i am trying to use the mobile hot spot from my phone for my mac but i go into my network settings and it's not showing up where i can choose it. Can anyone please let me know what i am doing wrong and i would like to use it for gaming on my ps3 in 2 weeks when i go on vacation because the place we stay at has no internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated
 
I used it during the introductory free trial period (not on a mac, but with a pc) and it worked fine. After the initial setup (which was pretty intuitive), I would just enable it, then connect to it in the usual way on the laptop. Now that the trial period is over, I'll have to sign up for the service and activate it before using it again and it's just too expensive to justify. If you've signed up and activated it, it should be seemless even for the mac. Only downside is it will suck your battery dry in an hour or two unless you're plugged in. - MarkC

I'm missing something about your comment, what does it suck dry?
