Question about notification settings

Hi - I just purchased the SamSung Galaxy S III last night and so far I must say I really like it. My last phone was an iphone and it is very different.

In saying that I have seen several threads about expanding battery life. One thread mentioned conserving your battery by modifying the settings regarding when your phone updates (emails, etc). Well I have been trying to do this all morning and cannot find the option to modify this setting... Right now it is updating at least every 30 minutes... Can someone please help?

Thanks so much! :)

The settings for sync frequency are typically app-specific. for example, to change how often your Email syncs, open the Email app, open the settings menu (lower left next to home button, only lights up when you press it) click on "sync options" and choose anything from "push" (immediate) to once a day etc. Some apps (like Gmail) only offer push or manual syncing- every app is different. You can toggle syncing on or off globally.

Hope that helps!

what app are you using for email?

as far as notifications, any app that has a notification can be turned on or off as well as the notification ringtone to use within the app it self

when you in a app hit the menu key(the hidden key to the left of the home button) there would usually be a settings for the app then look for Notifications

Thanks for the prompt feedback.. To answer your question - My emails that are currently set up are Gmail so the gal at BestBuy added the gmail app to my phone... There is still an email app but I was told not to use it that it would make things more difficult...

I went to the Account and Sync settings under Settings and the options are "Sync Now" and "Remove Account". I clicked the Sync Gmail just to try and it turned the sync off all together rather than giving an option as to when it should update..

I hope this helps so you can help me find out what I need to do.. sorry I am not a phone genius by any stretch of the imagination.... I know I am no help.

Yep- I think your only options with Gmail are to sync immediately "push" or manually (you turn off sync in the menu you refer to above) by pressing the sync icon (lower right corner in Gmail app, two arrows in a circle) to do a manual sync. It might also do a manual sync each time you open the app- never tried syncing that way.

Like posted above the Gmail app uses push meaning its not looking for mail all the time wasting battery so your fine there.

I dont buy into the people that say notifications kill the battery, for me i would be wasting more battery constantly opening apps to see if i have anything new.

but like i posted above notifications can be turned on or off within that app itself not in the phone settings but in the app settings

I wouldn't worry about the battery spent by syncing one Gmail account- if you infrequently get emails, it won't use that much energy & if you use Gmail all the time, it will be you checking them and the juice burned by the screen that will kill your battery, not the act of syncing. I suppose it could suck a lot of battery if you got a ton of emails & never checked them, but I'm guessing most people that are in that situation check their email pretty frequently.

I have a Gmail account & an Exchange corporate account, both on push, plus Tweetdeck updating every 15 minutes & God knows what else going on in the background I'm not aware of and it's Maps & the Screen that are eating up the majority of my battery life if I look under system settings. Even at that, I took my phone off the charger at around 8 this morning, it's now 2 pm and I just hit 89%.

Don't worry about your Gmail. :)

Thanks you all for your help!!

I do have to say, speaking from someone who had an iphone just yesterday, the Samsung Galaxy does use more battery life so far. Granted it does have more "bells and whistles" so to speak than what I had on my other phone... but the only think that has been checking is a weather app and my work and personal gmail acct. It has been off the charger since 7:00a and it is 2:14p with 69% battery life left... I asked the rep at Best Buy the difference in the battery life between the iphone and the Samsung before i purchased it as I wasn't very satisfied with the life of the iphone's.... All they said was, "it will use quite a bit of battery, but it has a bigger battery.." I have 14 days to return it if I want to switch since I just upgraded... not sure I will do that but still... I really don't want to be driving and have a dead phone....

your stats are almost identical to me i take off the charger around 650am and i am at 70% around 2pm everyday

What killled my battery was the wifi continually losing and then finding the signal. Or course that was because my home has a weak wifi signal. So I just turned off wifi when at home and that solved the problem.
