Question about phone and service.

Hello! I am currently using the HTC Evo V 4g on Virgin Mobile. I want to switch to T-Mobile's prepaid 50 dollar plan because they have better service in my area.

My questions are, I planned on buying a used Galaxy S 2 off of Ebay. Then I'm going to go to wal-mart and buy a super cheap T-Mobile prepaid phone, activate the prepaid sim card that comes with the cheap phone, and then put the Sim card in the Galaxy S 2. Will a prepaid tmobile sim card work on this phone?

Also, the phone I'm buying hasn't been updated to ICS. I plan on doing that as soon as I get it activated. Can I do it OTA from the phone or will I have to do it via PC?

Thanks for all answers!

Hi blh2012. I moved your thread to the T-Mobile forum where you can get a better answer on the plans.

Instead of buying the Walmart phone, you could just go to T-Mobile's site and and order a sim card activation kit. That's what I did with my Galaxy S2 I bought off Craigslist.

As far as ICS, it is not OTA. You will need to download and install Samsung Kies and use it for the ICS update.

Yep, works just fine. I got one for the $30 a month prepaid plan with 100 minutes and unlimited data. Put it in the phone, went to T-Mobile.com and activated it and that's all there was to it.

I'm a prospective T-Mobile customer. I live in Madison WI and travel mostly to the Chicago area, and less often to Albuquerque/Santa Fe, SF Bay area/Stockton, all over Tennessee and the DC area. I've read that T-Mobile is currently the king of 4G data rates, and am wondering just how far those high rates go.

Currently I'm a Sprint customer, and after getting the short end of the G stick (and some recent customer service that's totally unacceptable) I'm ready to switch to another carrier. If I switch to T-Mobile can I expect great service? I mean real great service, not a map that promises it. What kind of data rates can I expect in suburban Chicago? How about in smaller cities?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! TIA

YMMV.
You do unfortunately have to look at a map to get an idea.

Here is a suggestion that works for a lot of people... get the $30 5 gig/100 minutes wal-mart plan and a compatible device and take it for a spin.

Couple a value plan and a Galaxy Nexus from the Google store and you may actually come out far ahead.
HTH.
