Question about that little 'g' next to Contacts

Rardac

Newbie
What is it? What does it do? What does it signify? And, if it's a link or association to gmail (which I suspect), can I get rid of it? I really don't want to sync my contacts with gmail...at least not all of them.

It means its a contact from your Google Account, which I suggest using to sync your contacts. You can get rid of contacts (especially those with just email addresses) by hitting the menu button and go to display options and select Only contacts with phones.

Hi, it's gmail.

Contacts/Menu/More/Accounts/Gmail account/Unclick "Sync Contacts" and whatever else you don't want syncing.
I don't know how to only sync some of the contacts though.

If you keep the calendar's sync on, remember to choose "Google Calendar" when you make a new calendar entry on your phone, or it won't update the calendar on your PC.

It's an indication that Google / Gmail is lurking within your contacts. Care to get rid of it? Wanna avoid synchronization with Gmail? Do you have your contacts in Outlook?

If the answer to all three is "yes," I've got a nifty solution for you. Let me know!

As others have stated, yes it means you're pulling your contacts down from google. If it annoys you like it annoyed me (i couldn't set pictures for my contacts because they were google contacts, they did weird things when integrated with facebook, like linking to facebook 18 times per contact), you can export them (open up contacts, hit the menu button, go to export and export them all out to a single VCF file), then delete them (there are a dozen apps on the market that will do this), turn off the google contact sync (in the phone settings) and then re-import them from the VCF into the contacts (the same button you used to export them). Then they will be "phone contacts" instead of "gmail contacts".

GMail integration is my one big gripe about android. It's great for calendar, and it's great for email notifications, but why the hell would i want every person i've ever emailed in my phone's contact list (yes, i know you can filter them out, but still). I'm a clean freak with my phone though, so you're mileage will vary.
