Question About The SIM Card?

Hello everyone;
my 1st post.
I googled my problem with my Galaxy 10.1 last week and I got one of these threads here and so quickly solved the problem. :cool: (my tab was dead and nothing would make it boot up, I got suspicious of the airplane lol cuz it was working fine b4 I got on that flight)...anyway
I wanted to thank the person who posted the solution so I went ahead and registered here. I am glad I did cuz there are some good experts here and I am new in this field.

I got this Galaxy 10.1 and I know nothing about them. My friend brought this for me from overseas and so I inserted a European SIM card in it (so it stop giving the message when I boot up), but I think it is still Unlocked.

(Now I am back home in USA) so my questions are:

1-Is this Galaxy Tab also a mobile phone? (lol I told you I donno a thing about them).;) but really, I dont see any apps in there to dial out?
(If it is):

2-Does the SIM card from my provider (mine is AT&T and not by choice) "marry" my Tab (locks my tab where I could not be able to use a different SIM)?or can I later use a different SIM from a different Provider?(I do travel overseas often and they have really cheap Pay as you Go SIMs).
(being philosophical) I think the providers have No right to lock the phone which you paid for!

3- What do you suggest? Should I take it in ATT shop and have them ruin it (I mean work it) for me? Or just leave it alone and use it as GPS, web, etc, as I am doing now.

Thank you all very Much indeed.

I'm not sure which country your tab is from, but the only tabs that are generally locked to a carrier are the ones from the US. So I would bet any sim would work in your tab, however, you may have to tweak settings. Look up you model # and see what cellular bands are contained therein. Putting your ATT sim in there will not lock it to ATT.

If you have an ATT phone number, you should be able to make calls from your tab by downloading a dialer. (there may be free ones in the market, but I use Groove IP) That's all you would need. If you want to make phone calls over wifi/3g and not use your att minutes for the tab, get yourself a Google Voice number, buy Groove IP from the android market, and you have VOIP calls for the cost of the Groove IP app (4.99)

Edit: Whatever you do, DO NOT take it to ATT. We'll help you here :)

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesnt support calls, apart from VOIP, like Skype. I think it may support messaging. The SIM is in there for the 3G internet access.

Thank you all very much for the advice.
Now I think I have a pretty good idea as to what to expect from this tab.
Thanks a lot again.
