Help Question about Wifi vs 3G preference

Moop

Lurker
I'm completely new to Android so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I just got my SGS. The plan that I'm on doesn't have gobs and gobs of data, which is fine, because wherever I would need lots of data I have access to wifi and I'll only ever need to check e-mail or look at google maps when I'm off of wifi.

That being said, I don't want to be using my data unless I'm not in range of wifi. How can I set my phone to use Wifi exclusively instead of 3G when wifi is available and to only do downloads and updates over wifi?

Wifi is always given preference over 3G. However, wifi will turn itself off after the phone is on standby mode for a while. When that happens 3G will kick in.

Android does not download app updates automatically unless if you set it to.

Some apps allow you to select whether you want to allow it access to 3G. You will need to check the settings/preferences.
