What Would You do?

Hi All.

I've got a question for you guys and gals.

Lets' say that the only tower in my area goes down for a day or two. What is the best app or set up so that I can make AND receive phone calls over wifi with the One SV? I have an active cable modem w/ router so I'm good2go with wifi access.

I have GrooveIP set up with Google Voice and it makes perfect calls going out. I just can't get the phone to ring when someone needs to call me. The number that shows up on the other end when using GrooveIP cannot be used to ring my phone back.

I know that there are several set-ups that people have been using and are available to us and I would just like to hear from you all and what you would do if that scenario were to ever arise in your area.

If you would, please post the complete steps in order to set it up so that calls can be made and received from a device that is not getting a radio signal.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your answer and how you would go about solving that issue.

I think you can use Google talk to make and receive calls over wifi.

Try looking into this app too.

Yea to receive calls through Google voice you have to sign into Google voice from your web browser ,not the app, and change the settings from there. When u log in it looks like gmail, but is really g voice. You can allow incoming calls in the settings. They just have to call your voice number instead of your normal number, but you could always call forward your calls to the g voice number...if boost allows call forwarding. I've never tried.

BTW I use the groove IP setup with Google voice.

Thanks guys. I've guess I need to look into setting up Google Voice and GrooveIP to receive calls on my SV then. I knew there was a process that you had to go through in order to receive calls. From what I had read, it looked like it wasn't the easiest thing to do either.

Also, isn't there a fee to be able to receive calls through Google Voice? It's been awhile but the last I heard, they were going to start charging. That why I use GrooveIP to make calls when needed, over wifi.

I figured I would make this thread and see if there was any other way out there that was less complicated. :D.

Thanks for the posts guys. I appreciate your responses.

Maybe someone will post another method that only requires one app instead of having to use GrooveIP and G-Voice together too.

I use Sipgate and Google Voice on wifi. Last I heard Sipgate wasn't giving out free accounts anymore but it should function the same as any other service. I love it. Been doing it since 2009 and have no intention of going back to a carrier. For me its the convenience. Every device from my tablet to my Droid 1 works as a phone as long as I'm on wifi. Since I have wifi everywhere I go, its great. I specifically carry certain devices when I go places, like my crappy Galaxy Prevail when I go drinking so I don't care so much if I break it, my Captivate Glide when I'm going to be typing a lot, tablet at home because the battery lasts forever just sitting there, and still everything is tied to the same accounts.

This One SV is the newest in my collection. :)

Edit: you can also make calls free, not just receive them. I bookmark the mobile GV contacts page and put that shortcut on my home screen. When I make a call, it rings my device first then rings them after I pick up. But I think this step is avoided by using something like GrooveIP.

Awesome information guys. Thanks.

Keep the options coming. Please, i invite all to share what works for them sending AND RECEIVING calls over wifi. :D

Peace, I have tried many apps that allow text and wifi calls. Many of them allow dial-out and call-back but only if the other party has the same app. unless you want to keep buying minutes once the free minutes they give you is gone. For text i have been using Heywire(does wat i need it to do). For calls I have been using Magic jack for mobile beta. Completely free but you may get a crazy call back number. Remind you its still in beta so its a little buggy and drains battery like it aint no tomorrow. It constantly runs in the background so you would have to shut it down manually. Hope this help biker, havent seen your name since prevail days...

Thanks for the info bro! It's good to hear from you and I hope all has been going well. :)

Ah, the Prevail days....... good memories man. :D

i have the same suck reception at my house... i set up a google talk number, then got Smart Call Forwarding Lite set it up with prefix " *72 " deactivation " *720 "then linked it to my wifi and to my new google number... then i downloaded Talkatone free ...

now when i get home it automatically forwards my calls to my google number wich ring my phone via wifi, and when i leave my home it automatically deactivates call forwarding back to my normal cell number.... i do nothing but profit.

That's nice Smith. I really like the way you've got it set up to automatically connect when you're home. That's pretty darn neat. This is definitely something I am going to keep for future reference. Thanks. :D

i use groove ip, its a google voice intergrated app. i had no service for a few months and it was the only way i could make and get calls.
