question concerning messaging apps

Nite Hawk

Newbie
I am looking to download a sms app, and have noticed when reading there "permission" page that there are statements such as "allows the application to call numbers without your intervention", and "prevents phone from going to sleep".
This statement is on different apps such as handcent, goprosms, pansi etc. To me it sounds not good, like it is allowing the phone to "willy nilly" dial numbers without you knowing it and possibly run up your phone bill.
Now it may not mean that at all, but can someone out there give me an idea of what that means? or would I be risking a possible huge phone bill by installing these apps??
would appreciate some insight in to what this means as I do want to install a sms app, but am leary of possible problems..
thanks-
Nite Hawk

I think that means that if you type a text and hit the send button that you are giving the app permission to dial the number required to send the text too. I never have had any surprises from Handcent in the 2 years I have used it.

I agree with chrstdvd. I think behind the screen, the software uses its own network then connect with telcos for delivering text messaging.

I agree with everyone else. I have been using Handcent for about 2 yrs too and have never had any surprises. As to calling other numbers, Handcent has a feature were you can make a call from within the app.
