This is silly but when you pull down the notification bar, the date is at the top left. However, there is no day of the week. Is there a way (without root) to customize this?
In a word, no. It displays what you see and no way to change that, but you can get this app and you will see the date and day of the week both in your notification bar and in the pull down menu.
