question on europe / Russia travel

I recently got the S3 on AT&T; I got the phone unlocked and will get a local sim card in Moscow. That should be an interesting experience.

I am currently in London for the day - dang sure don't want data charges. Do I just leave it in airplane mode and just use wifi when available? Or is there a way to have the phone on so I can see who might call but not allow any data?
