Root Question re Rooting & Flashing Step by Step Guide

Today i followed the Rooting & Flashing Step by Step Guide to the letter(cleaning phone & re-flashing stock zvd rom), but don't understand the why's:

1. Download rom(to external to conserve space).
2. Backup(logically to external card).
3- Using your volume keys to scroll and your power key to select, scroll down tand select "Wipe data/Factory Reset" then scroll to "Yes" and select.
4- Scroll down and select "Wipe Cache Partition" and then select "Yes"
5- Scroll down and select "Advanced" and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache" and then select "Yes" then scroll down and select "Go Back"
6- Sroll down and select "mounts and storage" then scroll down and select ONLY these 3 listed, "format data" and then select "Yes", then scroll down and select "format cache" and then select "Yes", then scroll down and select "format system" and then select "Yes". Then scroll down to and select "Go Back"

But if anything goes wrong, one is up a creek with no paddles.

1. the wipes and formats leave one w/ no installed rom to reboot into while neither the computer or the LG Updater recognize phone(windows sees it as modem only). LGNPST sees but cannot read it.
2. the phone cannot read the sdcard, where the new rom or the previous backup could save the day:
cannot mount sdcard
cannot mount usbstorage

3. Formatting sdcard would lose everything.

The only lifesaver woulda been if things stored to internal, but with space at a premium....

CWM does list the entire structure of external sdcard under the internal one(since the directory structure is sdcard/_ExternalSD) but cannot access any of it.

k if ur made a back up already with rom manager u can get ur back up ,in cwm go to backups and restore then go to advance restored from internal SD card then go to back up then restore tap on it and u should c 5 files restore one bye one after u restored all of them then reboot
i thought people were having issues using backups from rom manager?? i always keep at least 1 backup on my sd card lol made from cwm tho..

Thank you so much for your help.

I have a brick. Phone starts into blank screen.

Stock ZVD W/ LD-ZVD Speed Kernel.

Had updated from ZVC,cwm, LD-ICS v1.2 GSE, plague 2.2 ext.

Just had never formatted / wiped / factory reset when updating....only the caches.

Had wanted to start all over with a clean install. SdCard size 8gb, 4.29 free just before made backup.

That's the problem, it's on the unreadable sd.
If i had a downloaded rom on internal, we would't be having this thread... but had moved all downloads to external to create more room.:)

well one piece of usefull info is that when you wipe 'DATA' you are not wiping out your system lol if you wipe data, cache and dalvik cache, you can simply reboot your phone and it would be like fresh out the box state, but with whatever rom you previously had..

no developer is dumb enough to leave you guys with the option of wiping out your system lol because than shit like this would happen.. lol luckily for you, you didn't.. so you shouldn't have any problems.. only issue i can think of is maybe the lg-update tool needs you to have usb debbugging enabled (im not sure) and if that IS the case, than all you need to do is boot up the rom, go to settings/applications/development and check on the debbugging option :D

not sure if that is the issue you are having tho... what rom did you have before doing all this? please dont say it was ld-lg zvd alpha lol, if it was than that means your phone (after wipiing) is completely stock but with su lol so you just need to boot it and do what i mentioned above..

can you provide a few more pieces of info? like what you were on before? (zvb,c or d) and what rom you had prior to wiping??

EDIT: im sorry the option to format system actually is on recovery lol, but not in any guide here does it EVER to say to do that lol
I don't have a rom to boot into, phone does not boot.
Only have recovery, nothing in internal to restore or install, all on unreadable external.

uhhh snds like you have a serious problem lol, if those are the only things you wiped than you SHOULD have a rom to boot into.. that being said, only thing to try is pull out sd card and format it, put new rom on and try again... also pull out battery and let it sit for about 5 mins.. than try again to see if it reads your external..

were you recently tampering with anyother device you had to install drivers for? maybe try re-instaling drivers and try the update tool again :/ sorry bro

thats wired cuz i only do back ups with rom manager and when I do testings and gets stuck on the blackscreen I still could recover my rom from the originally cwm

Ok, i did have an OLD backup here, which i restored.
I am now on LD-ICS v1.2 GSE / Plague Extreme 2.2 / ZVD
The only thing it wouldn't restore was the external card....which remains unreadable / grayed out in settings(actually says INSERT a card.

I'll try again recovery to see if it can now mount / read it. I'll try resting off / remove battery for 5 min, like you said, beforehand.

kool glad you were able to get somewhere :D yeah just try to get it to read the sd, if it dont.. DO NOT do anything untill you get it replaced!!

1. since back on plague, realizing some nice features that went by the wayside upon updating....should definitely have held off zvd until...

2. plague's a smidgen touchy on zvd.... screen won't come back on or slow to come back on at times---plugging charger will trigger it.... but at times will also quickly turn off before unlock code...takes a few tries sometimes, in other words.
Otherwise, phone is nicely responsive overall.

3. cannot see sdcard. Occurred right after backing up w/ cwm into external + then wiping caches & formatting internal card prior to attempting to flash rom.

4. phone contents not visible in windows since this restore, not even internal. Computer sees phone as Android Lge Phone, no explore, no letters. Once in a while E: CD appears(but no F for external card)-- clicking on it does not throw any contents, & often makes letter disappear.

Drivers listed in Device Manager--
several tether & modem:
comodo, easy tether, tether ethernet, pdanet, lge androidnet.
usb:
intel, generic, composite, usb hub....nothing with lg in name(ditto for next category)
system devices:
umbus-- root, composite & plain enumerators

have reinstalled all LG drivers ad nauseam.

One of the reasons i attempted to clean and flash was because root checkers would throw up "No..." message...although various apps' root functions could be enabled.

Thanks for your help. :o
I followed those steps in order:
wipe data n factory reset,
wipe cache partition and dalvik cache
mounts and storage: format data, cache and system(only these three)

forgot to answer the storage part-- tried mounting as both mass & web.

I think the problem was both internal and external were totally full.

I just deleted a bunch of apps from internal, and now computer sees both, with some caveats.

I had moved as much as possible to external(8gb) to free up room, then a backup to external likely finished filling it u( w/o completing itself either likely).
Then the update and fix filled up the only remaining space left, on internal.

btw It was hell trying to uninstall apps from internal-- a hit or miss depending on size...with attendant freeze and reboot when app uninstall failed.

Now computer sees both drives but can't access or read external...which has all missing call & sms data(only restore available was way older), so format is not desirable option.

Only thing left is to insert sd in reader or usb adapter...and hopefully be able to delete something to free up space...one of these days(both moving and taking over a business out of town)...

This episode showcases basic smartphone shortcomings of woefully insufficient internal storage and underwhelming external storage options.
And this to boot with zero multimedia, zero gaming, and almost zero data of any other type.

Henceforth, only tablets...so goodbye Metro.

I think the card got cooked(during the backup process in cwm). Sandisk 8gb

Stuck it in usb adapter and windows(7 64bit) can';t access it.
IT's given a letter but 0 bytes full 0 bytes empty
recuva can't access it
format says insert disk to format...even if file structure damaged, format should be able to work.
other cards work ok in reader.

I;m out of ideas...

Going forward i think a manual weekly backup to computer is de rigeur.

At those gb sizes don't think auto backup to cloud or to computer over wireless is feasible? Unless maybe a sync would do, once first backup in place....

Sd cooked...and used absolutely minimally....likely caused other phone lag issues while gradually 'simmering' to oblivion....

Seems like higher than par such incidents on this phone
model?

At times gets very hot....
