Depends on what launcher your using and what layout.
Some launchers crop better than others. Some launchers will also crop differently based on whether you have wallpaper set up to be "fixed" or " moveable with scroll"
I've always found that go launcher had the best manipulation on the wallpaper... and all aspects of a launcher really..... but go is very very heavy.
Try diff launchers, diff settings, or crop your photo prior
