Newbie
hey guy, so im planing to root my desire in the next couple days, so i have been doing my research on everything i can. i have been following this tutorial and im planning to use CyanogenMod for for my ROM.
the thing im worried about is if need be i would like to have a copy of the TRUE stock ROM for emergency. do i need to ROOT and S-OFF before i can do this or before?
im just confused as to what this process is called is it the " ADDING CUSTOM RECOVERY" portion of the tutorial i have been flowing?
thx for the help in advance

it depends if you root using unrevoked, it will install a custom recovery for you.

If you s-off only with revolutionary you will have to set up fastboot on your pc and fastboot flash a recovery image yourself.

You can only make a true "image" (nandroid backup) of your true stock rom from a custom recovery, so after to answer your questions.

Firstly, there's an updated version of that tutorial linked in the All Things Root Guide sticky post, so it would be better to use that.

Rooting with Revolutionary is a 3 stage process.

1) use Revolutionary to get S-Off

2) this lets you install a custom recovery

3) the custom recovery lets you take system backups, flash modifications (such as rooting your stock ROM) or install custom ROMs.
Hope that makes it clearer.

So using revolutionary you can make a backup of the stock rom before rooting, but you need to install the custom recovery first (as that is what makes the backup). If you want to return completely to stock (e.g. for warranty purposes) you need to replace recovery and hboot too, which requires a ROM Upgrade Utility. There is info on this in the sticky post (look in the rooting faq, but there's an extra step needed with Revolutionary).

Be sure you know whether you have a GSM or CDMA phone (GSM use SIM cards). Don't flash the wrong version of a rom or recovery, or flash a custom hboot from Alpharev.nl onto a CDMA device.

And remember that CM doesn't include Google apps (such as the market), so you need to add them. This is described on the CM site and XDA threads.

Ok thanks

so to confirm I have everything down in terms of following updated the tutorial
1) make use usb debugging is turned on my phone. And I have installed and uninstalled HTC sync leaving behind drivers and have downloaded HBOOT drivers.

2) Choose a recovery - I am still a little foggy on this part. the tutorial recommends 4Ext Touch recovery but then goes into saying if you have a GSN device ( as I do) and would prefer a non touch recovery then determine what is compatible. So will 4EXT allow me to create the stock ROM or should I go with Amon-Ra? Or is either of these relevant to creating one?
3) Set up fast boot for windows
4) download Revolutionary and root file (Superuser)
5) Run Revolutionary <- Will S-OFF my phone
6) "add custom recovery" < is this the process of creating the stock image or is it right before or after this?
7) Root

thanks for the help all
sorry I am suck a noob at this. :/

4Ext Touch is what I use, and will work with any GSM Desire (provided you usr the GSM version). The warning is just that if for some reason you want to use CWM 2.5.0.7 you need to check whether the phone is compatible. Unless you want to flash really old roms there's no good reason not to use 4Ext.

Any custom recovery can back up your ROM. But you have to explicitly go into the recovery and use it to make a backup.

I came across this page and I think it cleared up many questions for me.
So are 4Ext, amon-RA, and CWM all same things - custom recoveries?
And once I have achieved S-OFF and have added a custom recovery I can do a nandroid backup and the flash a new ROM correct?
