What is its purpose? I have seen posts elsewhere that says you only need it for app2sd, but I use app2sd without having one so just wondering what the benefit of partitioning your sd card is. Is this something that isnt necessary since there is native support for installing apps to SD in Froyo?

An ext partition on your sdcard is not needed for apps2sd, it's needed for link2sd. They're about the same except link2sd moves the entire app to the sdcard rather than just the apps data. If you do decide to make an ext partition, make sure you backup everything on your sdcard because it will get wiped when you partition.
