questions about the x10

Lurker
I wanted to buy the x10 but i had a few questions before i do.

How is the battery life? I wanted to use the phone as an mp3 player which would probably be used 2or more hrs a day. could the battery handle it?

also it it worth buying the unlocked version? im in the US if i buy the unlocked version could i update to 2.1?

or it would be better to get with att since its like free with them.

also did they ever fixed the calling voice/keyboard problem? its 2011 so im jsut wondering

Unlocked and debranded is always best, but depends on your budget. My battery life on 2.1 is excellent, but in general 2.1 came with a significant increase in battery life.

I have listened to about 3 hrs of mp3 podcasts today and it used maybe 10 percent of my battery life (while texting and taking a couple incoming calls) I usually charge about once every day and half, but could go 2 days. Some people who have really concentrated on conserving battery power can make it last around 4 days without charging...but I assume that is with very little usage, low screen brightness, all options turned off.

Leaving things like Data/Wifi on all the time will reduce the battery length...I turn it off most of the day and only turn it on when I use it.

Super easy to root yourself....as simple as downloading an application from the market...or copying a file to the phone and then running it....done. Then on top of that, if you want to remove the extra ATT software download another app and remove some stuff....or do what I did, root the phone, install a recovery console/bootloader and then use a custom rom/image. A lot easier than I thought and tons of info on this forum on how to do it.

That's what I did...except in Canada with Rogers....but that's because I don't want to spend $500+ on a phone...especially a phone that they report won't be updated after 2.1....it already has replacement coming.

Don't know what problem you are talking about...maybe someone else will chime in.

I read that some people had unclear calls. is this fixed with the updates?

so is rooting essentially unlocking the phone? and does rooting give multi touch?

im just trying to find out if i should buy unlocked but at 420$ on amazon... its really pricey with all the new phones coming out. plus ATT offer for free on 2 yr contract...

but i read that att does not have 2.1 yet either on this forum...

thank you!

Rooting unlocks...next step I guess would be debranding (or in my case installing xRecovery and then installing a custom rom/image that is a custom theme and 2.1 image)

Depends....I plan on keeping the phone for 2-3 years. But I was going to go contract anyway...I trust my carrier, they have good service in my city and rest of the country...and there is no way I am paying over $400 bucks for a phone. And all new phones are so expensive if you don't get them on contract. But totally up to you.

It's not like I am locked to the phone for 2-3 years...I could always buy the next one I get and try and sell this one...but I don't plan on it.

Not sure...I heard it was ATT or Verizon that hadn't updated to 2.1 yet (no multitouch) I don't think the x10 will ever be true multitouch, so if you want to play any games that require multitouch, this phone might not be for you.

There are a lot of Verizon and ATT members on here who do already use 2.1 and a beta version of 2.2 on their phones, but it will require some updating of your own...getting 2.2 isn't as easy to get it on there right now, but it's possible and I am sure it will get easier.
