Help Questions about transferring Skyrocket 2 to someone else

I'm going to give my S2 away and want to wipe the data. Everything is already backed up onto my PC. I've several questions about the process.

1. I plan to do a factory reset. To keep the data secure, I've come across a suggestion to encrypt the phone first. Necessary or not?

2. Once the phone is back to square one, will they be able to upgrade directly to the latest Android available from ATT or will it be more of a multistep process?

3. In either event, does anybody know if ATT is the best place to do so or should I go to the Samsung website?

Thanks in advance.

No. Factory reset returns the phone to the condition it was in when it first came out of the box (minus any files you've deleted - it doesn't replace missing files).

If it's a stock ROM, the ROM will stay at the current level. The next update will install when it's sent. If they have any questions, do the swap at an AT&T Support Center and they can ask (and maybe even have the phone reflashed).

3. In either event, does anybody know if ATT is the best place to do so or should I go to the Samsung website?
Go to AT&T (any store) and have them record the change of account of the IMEI from your account to his. That's just to make your buyer feel more secure. That way, you can't later report the phone stolen. He's the owner of record, so only he cam report it stolen. You're just assuring him that you're not going to be able to scam him, even if you wanted to.

That's my suggestion to all buyers in private phone sales - have the sale recorded by the carrier.
