Root Questions before rooting and ICS

Hi all,

I've been recently really tired of waiting on Bell for updates (still waiting on 2.3.5), so I'm thinking of rooting and installing ICS.

I have never rooted or played with this great potential of android phones
(but years a PC tech & gamer makes me want to dive in)

1) I've been looking at Virtuous Quattro RC3.
is it a good one? does the camera works (i need the camera)? anyone recommend that ROM? or is there a better one?

2) will my phone (calling) work fine with my locked Bell SIM card?

3) Will restoring some backups (apps, game saves, etc.) create issues or do i have to start fresh.

4) if there is issues, can I restore my the original Bell 2.3.3?

Thanks in advance :)

BTW, I've looked around and could not find some straight answers, hence why I'm asking here.

I understand, carriers never update as quickly as we would like.

I'm not familiar with your handset or this ROM, but I can tell you that in general most ICS roms are alpha right now. In most of them things not working include MMS, camera, and hardware acceleration. Of course, each rom will have it's own issues, these are just things that are notoriously difficult to get working with ICS. Some roms do have these things working, it varies from one to another. If the rom has working calling, then yes, your sim card will be fine. You may need to shop around for one thats ready for your needs, or stick with a good GB rom, like Cyanogen, for now.
3) Will restoring some backups (apps, game saves, etc.) create issues or do i have to start fresh.
You should be fine, Titanium Backup has enabled my progress in Angry Birds to follow me across many flashes of Froyo, Gingerbread, and ICS roms.
4) if there is issues, can I restore my the original Bell 2.3.3?
If you make a nandroid first, again you should be fine. One word of advice though. Should you decide to restore your backup, it's a good idea to manually format the /boot, /system, /cache, and /data partitions. Restoring a backup doesn't erase first, it just overwrites.
I hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply Bro :)

"not as quickly as I'd like" is an understatement... Didn't HTC release 2.3.5 like in December 2011?.. Telus release it over 2 months ago... :(

As for an ICS ROM:
MMS and Camera is really important to me and I guess I'm wondering if anyone knows of a solid one that has these working for my device?

I realized as well that save games are not that important to me... i mean, i can always play them again... but i will look into titanium backup for sure.

Since it's my first time rooting and doing all that jazz... do you have a guide you know of that shows these things? I've looked around a bit and could not find something straight forward.
Just something kinda step by step so i can familiarize myself with all that.

I'm so scared of bricking my device, cause I sure can't afford another.

Thanks again and hope I'm not being a pain :o

Thanks again Brother swing!

I'm actually waiting for a 32gb SD in the mail, so I will wait for it before I do all that...

I think i will go with Virtuous Quattro RC3 since i found a good step by step guide for it.

What do you think of this guide?
(I'm I allowed to post a link?(about to see I guess))

Upgrade HTC Incredible S to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich with Virtuous Quattro ROM

I'll post back on this thread with updates

edit: actually just saw that RC4 is available... I might try that
