Questions from a Rookie about a Nexus 5

I know most of the people on here will probably roll their eyes, but I have several questions from a rookie.

I bought a new Nexus 5 Friday.

I have not found a central location that will explain all the features of the phone. The only thing in the box was a warranty. I have been to youtube and found a few links, but most relate to 'problems' and not general use for a new user.

1. But, when I cut it on...it seems like the phone remains 'on' for about 5 seconds before it cuts off. Is there someway I can increase the time that the start page remains on the phone before it cuts off.........? Otherwise, I have to hit the on off button to the right and cut it back on.

2. If I call someone, how can I add it to a list of phone numbers and their ID so I can just scroll down later and call them without typing it in every time.

3. How do I use google/ yahoo to search something on the web . I found the shortcut, but when i hit it, I see the address box for searching, but I can't find the way to type it.

4. How do I change my google plus profile ? The clerk helped me set up my phone but I did not know that my full name would show up...I want to eliminate my last name or just use the first initial of my last name. How do I do this ?

5. Under the time it has the day and date.........is there anyway I can increase the size of the date ? It must be font size 2. A little larger would be helpful.

6. Is there any way I can check to see how much data has been used during the month .......I have T Mobile.

7. How can I check to see if I am online using wifi or if I am using the data plan. I did manage to find the entry for wifi and it says it is on, I have gotten that far.

8. I would ask how to add an app, but that might be premature now.....I might have a panic attack trying this early..........lol

9. Does the map function on the phone use data space when I am using (when I figure out how to use it) it ? The clerk tried to sell me on a monthly program that allowed more data time. But the last phone I had with Verizon, once I called up the map function and dialed it up.....I could get turn by turn instructions but I was not charged for any thing other than the initial phone call. There was no charge against data.

10. It says that Caller ID is disabled by Google. How do I enable it ?

11. My phone is not locked, primarily because I did not want to lock MYSELF out of it until I got comfortable with it. Do most people here lock it ?

12. I have heard there are apps you can add that will track the phone if it is stolen. Do many people here use it ?

13. What are the most popular apps here that people use......I want to add some after I figure out how to use the thing.....lol......what are the most popular apps that people use here ?

That is enough for now.......figuring these out will keep my Saturday filled.

Thanks......

Welcome to the forums! I can't answer all of these (my nexus is still in the mail) but I can answer the ones that are more general to android!

1) Are you referring to the lock screen or your home screen? The lock screen (the time with the lock icon you swipe to unlock the phone) has a set time before screen off, but if you're referring to the home screen (has a bunch of icons and such) you can change the display off time under settings>display.

6) You should be able to check your data usage under settings>usage. However, this is based on when you tell the the phone your billing cycle restarts, so if you don't set that correctly you might have issues. I'll muck around and see if I can find a text code to send to t-mo to get a data reading from them.

7) In general, if you have the wifi icon in your status bar (radial fins upwards, as opposed to cell data, which is the bars that get taller left to right) you are using wifi and are logged into a wifi network.

11) Most people tend to use some kind of lock screen security. It helps if your phone dissapears or gets stolen or lost; you know that it'll be hard for someone else to access your phone.

12) A lot of people (me included) are starting to use the Android device manager app that's built into your phone for this. I think the way to set it up is to go to the website on an internet browser (you can probably google it) and log into your google account, and follow the directions.

Settings>Display>Sleep

2. If I call someone, how can I add it to a list of phone numbers and their ID so I can just scroll down later and call them without typing it in every time.
I think if you long press the number, you will get "Call details" page which includes "Add to contacts" so touch the add person icon.

Touch the search box and your keyboard should pop up.

If this isn't what you want, search within Google+ help.

5. Under the time it has the day and date.........is there anyway I can increase the size of the date ? It must be font size 2. A little larger would be helpful.
Possibly if you root, so no, you cannot change it.

6. Is there any way I can check to see how much data has been used during the month .......I have T Mobile.
Settings>Wireless&Networks>Data usage

7. How can I check to see if I am online using wifi or if I am using the data plan. I did manage to find the entry for wifi and it says it is on, I have gotten that far.
The wifi icon looks like an open fan and the cellular icon is a triangle. I'm not sure on stock if you get dl/ul arrows when in use. If you want to be sure you don't use cellular data, turn on airplane mode (Wireless&Network>More>Airplane Mode, then turn wifi back on.
8. I would ask how to add an app, but that might be premature now.....I might have a panic attack trying this early..........lol
If it's from the Play store, it's added automatically.

9. Does the map function on the phone use data space when I am using (when I figure out how to use it) it ? The clerk tried to sell me on a monthly program that allowed more data time. I believe Maps use data, but it's a small amount. There is no call involved. You do this through the Google Maps app. You can check your particular app data usage on the data usage page. Scroll down to the app.

10. It says that Caller ID is disabled by Google. How do I enable it ?

11. My phone is not locked, primarily because I did not want to lock MYSELF out of it until I got comfortable with it. Do most people here lock it ?
???? Yes, but I don't use a password, just the lock screen.

12. I have heard there are apps you can add that will track the phone if it is stolen. Do many people here use it ?
???? I did install GotYa!

13. What are the most popular apps here that people use......I want to add some after I figure out how to use the thing.....lol......what are the most popular apps that people use here ?
Now that you know how to type in the Google search box, you can find out.
That is enough for now.......figuring these out will keep my Saturday filled.

Thanks......

I hope some of these help.

5) The clock with the time and date is just a widget. A widget is a way to display info from an apo without opening an app (in this case the clock or calendar)

I'd suggest downloading chronus from the play store, its widget is highly customizable

some more questions......

what does it mean data is commuter shared.....or something like that...

and what does it mean when data is auto synced.........I think it means that when you call someone or send an email, that your personal data is all sent together like email, fb etc.....

that sounds like something I might want to uncheck.......I don't want google to know that much.......

I'd never found a app/widget, including Gravity Box which allows me to customize lock screen background and zip themer which allows me to customize the lock (attached), that allows me to alter font size of date.

It may not answer all your questions, but I found this very useful when I first got my Nexus 5:

https://support.google.com/nexus/?hl=en#topic=3415518

For future reference, here is Google's quick start guide:
http://static.googleusercontent.com...d/android_ug_42/Android-Quick-Start-Guide.pdf

It doesn't cover everything, but you may find useful info in it. You can also search for it in the Google Play Books app to download and read it on your phone

:)

I am going to check it out tonight.

When you go to the web.......like drudge report etc.....how do you delete it from the screen after you have been there ? I con't see an X like you see on a laptop and I don't see where I can right click and delete it........any ideas ?

Also, when you type in someone's contact information and you realized you misspelled their name and want to correct it, how do you go back ? I have tried double tapping etc...I can't seem to find it.

The arrow with the X on the right side of the keyboard is the back key.

While in the crome app, tap on the squares next to the address bar and you'll get the screen shown below, where you can "x" out of tabs

How do you set limits or a warning on your phone so I don't exceed the data limits ?

I found the instructions on the links provided above, but it did not make sense to me.

The link showed me a graph with sliding bars but there was no way to fix the bars or determine what I was measuring.

Is this a popular thing to do ?

There is no need to pay for data if I can use it for free with wifi.

I would rather save it when I don't have coverage or while driving....

Thanks

You should be able to find that under settings>usage, or settings>wireless networks> usage (I can't remember where it is), just make sure you set the reset date to match your billing reset date, or it won't work well.

I found the settings entry........but I tapped and clicked everything and the date won't reset.

You need to tap the box "Data usage cycle" (above the graph) and then hit "Change Cycle..." then you can select the billing date each month.

And make sure you have the correct dates by dragging the left and right vertical white bars on the graph to either side.

thanks, I found the data usage cycle but i never found the change cycle box.

I did manage to move the bars to the left and right.

I saw it change on the bottom, but they would not remain fixed.

I did manage to see that there were 2 bars......one for wifi and one for data.

the data box goes from jan 10 to today...........the wifi box goes from friday the 14th.......when it was purchased.........to today, that one is correct.

the wifi lines start at the far left where i think they should be

but the data lines start 90 percent of the way to the right. it seems logical that they should start to the far left with the wifi lines , when the 'count' started.

------

also........when I add a wifi spot it says forget and cancel.........i guess cancel means u x out of it. what does forget do. ? I read the links from google and it said that if I save a wifi spot that it will automatically sync up when I revisit the same spot. I have not been to the same free wifi spot since Friday. I could not find help for this from the google link.

Thanks

Vetical bars - as far as I can see are just there so you can check the span of dates where you want to see quickly how much data you have used within the current cycle.

Horizontal bars - for setting warning level and data cap if you have "set mobile data limit" ticked

Wifi usage is on a separate graph entirely if you have "show wifi usage" ticked.

I'm not sure about the wifi settings as I rarely use public or open wifi. I belive "forget" tells the device not to flag up a previously used wifi network automatically though.

thanks, I had the airplane mode on and the mobile data cut off

when I cut off the airplane mode and cut the mobile data on, the boxes came back up.

a lot of different nuances to figure out.........lol

I wonder if apple is easier...........they always pride themselves on being user friendly and intuitive.......but i was not going to pay 699 for a phone when I could pay 396 ( and get a free phone protector) and do the same stuff for half the price.

BTW, if you use the google link and go through every link it will take 4,5 hours but you learn a lot about the phone. It is a useful tool if you use it right.

It take some getting used to, but I am getting there...........many thanks for everyone's help.

That's what I thought, but it keeps bringing them back!

That's exactly why I bought a Nexus 5 - and the bigger screen!

I've had a play with Marge's iPhone 4S and I don't find it any more easy. I think that, in time, you'll find the Nexus really quite intuitive.
