Questions on the Pay By The Day plan

Hi folks,

Just got my Nexus 5 and activated it on Straight Talk. I also ordered a free SIM from T-Mobile as I would like to give them a try. I recall several years ago a buddy of mine had them and coverage was pretty dismal where I live. So much so that he cancelled the service after about a week. I wanted to see if they've improved at all since then.

Has anyone used the Pay By The Day plan? I was thinking I could pick that plan and load some funds on my account. I would then only use the service for a day here or there as I'm in different parts of town to test out the coverage in the various areas where I go around town. This would allow me to test things in different parts of town as time permitted. I could then decide about porting my number over and making a permanent switch.

If anyone has used the Pay By The Day plan I'd like to hear how it worked out for you.

Hey Gary,

I use T mobile's pay by the day plan occasionally as I am testing out their network throughout New England vs. Verizon. So far it's pretty good, but 4G is not as strong as Verizon. You are only charged $3 per day on the days your phone is actually turned on. When its turned off you aren't charged from the money you added. Also, money added to your account is only good for 90 days typically. So you need to use the phone within the time period otherwise the funds are forfeited.

I love the N5. This is my first time with an unlocked phone and no contract, and I really like it.

We are moving from Sprint to T-Mobile but decided to test the coverage first using that single day plan.

Note that when you add to the prepaid account, you cannot add less than $10 at a time. So we added $12 to try it out four days. We were also charged sales tax on the purchase.

Sprint voice coverage is horrible at my spouse's office - so bad that Sprint gave us a femtocell (Airave) free of charge. Spouse took our test phone to the office and found that reception was just fine. We also checked out a few other places that have sketchy Sprint coverage - all of them were covered just fine by T-Mobile.

Here we come, no contract life!

We are moving all our lines but one to T-Mobile. Turns out I get a discount of another 15% because of my employer. We've ordered the SIM cards and will off Sprint this month.

I ported my mom's Sprint phone to Ting - I offered to get her a new flip phone and pay the $10/month for her line but she didn't want to be bothered to learn a new phone (she is disabled and has trouble with her hands.) She uses way less than 100 minutes per month and with Ting she was able to keep her Sprint phone. Her base monthly rate is $6/line plus $3 for up to 100 minutes. If she uses 101 - 500 minutes her charges increase by $6.

I also found a nice, helpful person on this site and used his referral code to get my mom a $25 account credit - so she won't have a bill for the first two months of service. He got credit as well. These forums are wonderful!

Based on our current usage we will save about $100/month on T-Mobile compared with our Sprint service. Meanwhile my mom is thrilled with Ting.
