Quick clarification on backups

Am I right in thinking that I am able to root my phone using this guide for example, and all the apps / contacts / hot goat porn etc remains? At which point I can go in with something like Titanium backup, save everything, and then slap in a more customised rom?

Also, i'm on 2.3.4 atm, should I update with odin first to .5 or just go with a .4 guide?

Cheers

looks all fine and correct, except that you want to match your chainfire insecure kernel to your build number, which you've cut off your screenshot.

if you're gonna install a rom, no need to update first - get rooted on your current 2.3.4 then flash rom.

Ah right, I thought the 2.6.35etc string was the only bit that was important. The line I cut off was 'GINGERBREAD.XWKI4'.

The 2.6.35 bit is the kernel. Which is just one part of the firmware our build number. But yeah, good to go with cf ki4

I've clicked start and now it's just sitting there (several minutes later) having done nothing.

Alright, i've unplugged it and rebooted to the state it was originally. Am I using the right file?
