I just spent a couple of days trying to figure out how to get the android market app on my "new" (used $20 Pantech Breakout) smartphone that I bought to use as an mp3 player. Finally figured it out and wanted to share with others in case they were having problems.
I'll just post the info here and then an admin can put the info where it belongs.
This applies to a Pantech Breakout, but may work for other phones too.
The Story: I wanted a new MP3 player and figured why not get an old smartphone and use that instead. WAY more powerful than an mp3 player, sd card, extra little apps, wifi, what's not to like. Man, mp3 player makers really need to up their game. Anyway, I got this "old" smartphone without a sim card in it for about 20 bucks on ebay. I didn't know what I was doing but figured I'd give it a try. (I didn't know if everything would work since I didn't want to sign up for a contract with verizon or activate the phone or anything, I just wanted a little pocket computer mp3 player.) Well, I got it. I put a little sd card in it and I got it to connect to my wifi no problem. I could check my gmail and stuff, but when I went to the marketplace app to get a new and better music player than the standard one that came on the phone I couldn't ever get the app to download.
I could get to my gmail account, so I knew my connection was good. Well after all kinds of fiddling around I figured out something that may help others who are doing something similar and can't get to the app store. To get to the android market so you can download apps go to the EMail App and set up your email on the phone. Once I did that I was able to download and install apps.
