Root Quick Question

Hey guys, just a quick question here. Im looking into creating ROMs and Kernels and what not to help improve our little section and give our phones that extra kick in the rear it needs :)

I was reading on XDA that dsixda's android kitchen is perfect for beginners. Except it doesn't support the prevail. The post said something about adding support for extra devices but it might not work with the non HTC devices. So im basically wondering if any of you has used dsixda's kitchen before and if it works well with the prevail.

If it don't work well with prevail where would i begin such a huge task as making a ROM? Im sure some of you have some great tuts on just this, and you wouldn't mind sharing right? :)

Also if any of you would like to tackle this task with me just say so :) thanks guys

To add support for the prevail you would need to create a working edify_def. (I haven't used the kitchen so I won't be of any help adding device support)

As for some guides, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you hoping to make a cm7 based rom? (One built from source) are you trying to make a stock based rom? (In which case you would need to take the stock rom, make some edits, change some apks and do some theming.

Tools I would recommend for editing the stock rom include apktool, 7zip, GIMP, basic command prompt skills and lots of patience. :D

If you want to build from source, hroark13 had some great tuts for compiling the source for our phone. You will need a Linux based operating system and will need to set up a build environment.

eh i was gonna use stock rom or build from ctmod for my first rom. Im just gonna ease into building from source like cm7. and thanks for the links :) i couldn't find anything on this for prevail. Most are for other devices. but im going to download kitchen and try to add support for us. Ill take some notes and if i get it working ill post a small guide to doing so for anyone else wondering the same thing

Sounds good.

If you're looking for ideas as far as what to add, look as some other stock based ROMs (even from other devices) if you find a feature you want to add, 9 times out of 10 someone has made a guide for accomplishing this. Just Google the feature and see what you come up with.

Well you're definitely in the right place. I don't think there is a person here who isn't more then happy to lend a hand if they can. :)

im reading here that your pc needs to be 64-bit for anything gb 2.3.x and up. 32-bit will only work with older versions. im running windows 7 32-bit on my laptop and that's all i have. is there a way i can do all this without needing a 64-bit system?

You mean with the kitchen? Idk... :o I've never used it. But I would assume that if it has those requirements, then that's what you need to use

Im pretty sure its necessary, I haven't used a 32-bit system before, so I've never tried.

well it says here that
Note: It is also possible to build Android in a virtual machine. If you are running Linux in a virtual machine, you will need at least 16GB of RAM/swap and 30GB or more of disk space in order to build the Android tree

since im new the the android world and i have only worked with php, html, css code i have no clue as to set up a linux virtual machine and all that other mess.

this is just getting more fun as we go :) lol im going to end up going through a whole pack of cigarettes before i even start making the rom

Not to dissuade you, but you dont need to Linux setup and everything if you are just going to tinker with the stock or an existing ROM.

i switched from the heavily developed Prevail and went to a zte phone with no roms or anything and managed to build this http://androidforums.com/merit-all-...-cream-scamwich-2-0-3-17-happy-st-pattys.html out of stock 2.3.5 all from a win7. changed everything around got most of cm7 and 9 functions I wanted.

I would add notepad++ to the list of tools lordVincent gave you. regular notepad isn't gonna work.

Crap! I knew I was missing something. I definitely agree! Notepad++ is a must have.

:D:D:D

ive been using Notepad ++ for years lol and i don't want to just change things or add apps i know how to do that. im making a completely new rom pretty much. i know how to do most things like changing boot animation, changing default wallpaper, adding/removing system apps. simple stuff but i want to get into the advanced stuff like making roms from source and making kernels and stuff like that

well it has come to my attention that i need ubuntu to do things and a bunch of other things i need to download and i live in the woods and can't get internet out here. im running off a hotspot on my phone with only 1 bar signal so i can't download anything at all without it taking 6+ hours our my hotspot cutting out every minute. i will try to get everything i need next time i go into town but it might be awhile before i start making kernels and stuff.
