Root quickest/easiest way to root my phone?

hi, i'm a complete noob with rooting and the like (i'm pretty good with computers but a lot of stuff on here may as well be in another language!). anyway, i tried downloading the z4root, but it just wouldn't install (was hoping to use it as it claims to root your phone in 1 click). can anyone tell me any other similar methods of rooting my phone with as little risk/hassle as possible please?

if you need any tech specs just ask (may have to tell me where i find them as well)

anyone? i'm desperate to get my phone up to date!

also, the main thing i want to do is get to android 2.2 - is rooting the way to do this? or can i use an easier method to update my phone?
