QuickPic sold to Cheetah Mobile

Thanks for the investigation EM. My copy is uninstalled an d will remain that way. (It is interesting the you trust Google to do anything.)

I have found that when you store something that has gone bad ... it has a tendency to keep causing problems.

I deal with people that I ask "how many calendars do you use on your phone"? 99% of the time they say one.

Remembering the good version of an app that was absorbed by an untrustworthy group is behold them. At some time they would do an update ... to get the fancy new version.

In support of that concept ... why does everyone want to go to Lollipop? They feel left out. They are antsy to upgrade. Newer is ALWAYS better.

As I mentioned ... uninstalled ... will stay that way. Too bad.

I've been playing with the Piktures app, and you can hide folders. When you click on the list of folders and the pencil on top you will see an icon (sorta looks like an eye) on the bottom right. They will be hidden. If you want them back, click on the pencil again and then the eye thingy. They will come back.

Haven't seen anything for in app purchases, yet.

I just sorted out all the stuff in the gallery in 1/2 hour.

OK, so, I'm trying it out - what are the in app purchases? I can't find them.

Have you found a way to add any cloud albums?

By the time most of us ever knew what data mining was we'd already been mined to no end.

In any case, Google has pretty clear privacy options and I definitely trust them for my operating system, so I don't have much of a trust problem.

Not sure if you were asking about or commenting on something else.
 
Nothing really. Since they have no qualms about distributing this bilge into a community that they essentially created is ... er ... I'm left without an adjective.

It's an open market, I'm ok with that.

There's been a media feeding frenzy for years over cyberspace privacy and now more people access the internet with a phone than any other way. Regardless of brand or ecosystem, you (rhetorical) have to be a candidate for a Darwin Award to not make the connection between you and the temptation with phone apps compared to Pinocchio and Pleasure Island.


I hope that the new permissions model in Android Marshmallow solves some of the user problem here. Unfortunately it's only going to apply to new apps but at least it's a start.

I see a lot of Kingsoft products on PCs here in China, most schools, colleges and unis are using WPS Office rather than Microsoft Office now. There was a government decree a couple of years ago, for government departments and academics stop using Microsoft products, and is has taken effect. Although they're still mostly using Windows rather than Linux as the OS. But Kingsoft does also make WPS Office for Linux as well, Chinese only.

I don't really use the cloud, but I see Dropbox in one of the lists. Dropbox is now offering a cloud photo storage. See if you can start an album to that. If that works, then see about whatever you use. Most of the help stuff seems to be on Facebook. I did see Google + I think in the help list, too.

The app is UK based.
 
Just installed F Stop to have a look. Have had Piktures for a few days now.

Tried A+ Gallery, whose permissions at least seemed to be appropriate for the task (local storage, and network access which it would need for cloud backup, nothing else). However, at least on my (2.5 year old) phone it lagged when viewing folders compared to Piktures (itself shower than QuickPic). A+ actually seems rather responsive, but probably because it's built a large index of its own (it's storing 56MB of data on my phone).

I also have a pre-CM copy of QuickPic, and as I don't use any cloud photo storage or share from the app I can happily firewall it. But like others I'm looking at alternatives, as sooner or later that will become necessary.
 
Cheetah has let it be known that they don't intend to flood the app with ads, and that the app will remain free.

Whilst I trust them on the second part, I don't know about the first part. I wish I could trust them, but since I've seen their other apps...

Even so, I'm also looking out for a replacement.

I tried Piktures, but since I'm rather used to the folder paradigm, the app doesn't really work for me.

As far as I'm concerned, if someone creates a Quickpic clone, I'd immediately go for it.

Regarding IAP, we are working on a couple of premium features that people cannot see right now but we are testing it internally.
Cloud access and PIN-code protected folders are coming soon to Piktures. They will be mostly free :)

It's good you're looking for a replacement. Don' let happy talk by Cheetah fool you. What Cheetah Mobile will do with QuickPic is what they do with their other software. They'll give it some 'improvements' to 'enhance the user experience' which is code for we'll add a couple of little things to make you think we're good guys. But the real 'improvements' will be adding code to, as I said in the opening post, scarf your information to be uploaded to CM and sold off for doing targeted ads and whatnot.

Just to refresh memories about Cheetah Mobile...here's a post I wrote about an article where the CM CMO says CM is a "data company" and the 'M' in CM stands for monetization. Meaning turning your stolen data into their money. With a link to the article.

I had a similar problem with Google Maps not allowing me to update my review earlier this year (I eventually gave up :( )


Also, remember to upvote reviews. (mark as helpful) By default the play store shows most helpful reviews. I changed it to newest and there are plenty of new helpful reviews that need to be at the top

Meh, don't be a grammar hater, their English is better than our Chinese. ;) :D

My favorite is people are actually spelling out FU, detailing spyware, rightfully trashing everything that they do, and the reply has changed and now begins -

"Can you please tell me more about your concerns?"

The concern is really simple - people want to know what to use instead.

What more clarification do you want? :D
