Quit smoking with Electronic Cigarettes??

I have found many people who were talking about quit smoking by vaping with e-cigs. I am a smoker and I really want to quit smoking. Will it work for me? Thank you.

I smoked for 22 years and quit about a year ago. I failed with hypnotism, the gum, the patch, and wellbutrin. What finally worked for me was the book "The Easy Way" by Alan Carr. It sounds silly, but it works.

hi there, i gave it a go not too long ago then one time i forgot it(at work) and decided to have a cigarette instead and unfortunately got back to smoking. Don't get me wrong i definitely found it worked, perhaps rather than cutting out completely and replacing it with an e-cig, replace some of your smoking with it using to cut down at first. However its hard to say it will definitly work for someone as it differs for everyone.

A large part of any addiction is willpower as well. You have to want to quite more than you want the satisfaction of smoking the cigarette. I had some friends that switched over to the e-cig and are pretty happy with it. That said, I am not sure if they are actually smoking much less.

YEah its hard to say as you are not really cutting down on the smoking. I have heard its also the habit of holding something in your hand. Sure the nicotine is a factor. But I know I worked with a smoker and he smoked for like over 40 years. When we got busy and had to work for like 3 hrs straight. He never missed the cigarette and when we got a break he said wow I havent had a cigarette in over 3 hrs. As he lights up the cigarette. I told him you went without one for 3 hrs you dont need it. He said yeah I know as he puffed away.

My brother in law took the prescription medication. I forget the name but he never had the urge to smoke even after stopping the medication. Sure its not for everyone. I just dont think the E cigarette is safe or stops you from smoking. Your just replacing one habit for another.

Best way is cold turkey, I have quit about 3 times in the last 10 years...I'm setting myself up to quit again in about 2 months.

Set up a date to quit. The urge for a smoke lasts anywhere between 5 seconds to 2 minutes. Find things to do to occupy the urge for that amount of time.

I smoke more out of boredom and habit, I'm constantly throwing half a cigarette away every time I light up. The only cigarettes that I really enjoy, first one in the morning, after I eat and before I go to bed.

Need to quit my 6 year old son told me today I should quit. Really kind of dumb that I do smoke, go to the gym 5 days a week and run and bicycle to.

I use the e-cig, but not as a means to quit, more to cut down. I don't smoke that much anyway. I'd typically have 2-3 each evening after work, and maybe 4-5 on the weekend nights when I'm out w/ friends & having a couple drinks. Now, I use the e-cig after work, & when I'm out w/ a certain friend who doesn't smoke. In the past, I'd excuse myself for 5 minutes while I go out & have a smoke. Now I can stay @ the table w/ him & still enjoy the smoking sensation.

The liquid used in the e-cigs varies in nicotine strength. I currently use stuff w/ a fairly high nicotine strength, mixed in w/ a few drops of 0 nic strength. That seems to work fairly well.

Chantix.... i just used it to quit after smoking for 20 years. I stopped taking the meds after about 6 weeks and i think about smoking every once and a while. Once the mental addiction goes mostly away its all about willpower (for me). I crave one less and less, its been over 2 months (link in sig) and i've never felt better, plus any craving i might have will never be strong enough to make me go to store and buy a pack......

I doubt they will work, they are just an excuse to have a puff indoors :)

I first tried to stop with gum and after 6 months found I couldn't stop the gum so decided sod it, I prefer the ciggys and they are cheaper than the gum. The last time I tried to stop I used a combination of patches and moving house (well moving country actually) and job. This has worked so far. This isn't saying I haven't had the odd puff when I've been in stressful situations and the opportunity for a smoke has presented itself (normally being around another smoker). The point is though after having the odd smoke I've been able to go back to my daily routine without that horrible craving niggling away in the back of my mind.

I believe the patch/moving/job house combo worked because the patch carried me through the move and the weeks following the move giving me the nicotine to not stop but reduce the cravings enough to make them manageable. To be honest I think once a smoker the cravings never go away for good but they do become manageable. As I was only having to change the patch once every 24hrs I didn't have to think about it like I did with the gum. The moving house/job is the major player because the hardest thing about smoking is association, the hardest thing to brake is having a smoke at the moment you would normally have a smoke. As I had been smoking for a long time (since I was 13, 16 years ago) that pretty much covers everything I've done in life involved having a smoke, so still now when I do something I don't do often like sunbathing on a beach a strong craving for a smoke kicks in but after half an hour or so it subsides and the next time I do that activity the cravings don't kick in so strong.

So it is a long process, you can't give up on a wim, it's just not going to work. You do need to be in for the long haul. But if you have a changing situation coming up especially something you relate to smoking like your job then have a good think about whether this is the right time, go for the patches and stick to the course. It will be hard but it will be a darn sight easier than it is with gum or E-ciggys reminding you about the fix all the time.

Smoked for 20 years...I got the flu REALLY bad back in February, it lasted almost 2 weeks and the smell and taste of cigarettes made me nauseous so I couldn't or wouldn't really smoke while I was sick.

By the time I was better I just didn't want them any more!

Long Story short...I quit smoking cause of the flu!! Friday is two months for me!

Different things work for different people. In the end you have to WANT to quit.

Nicotine Gum worked wonders for me and I haven't smoked a cigarette since June 16th, 2010.

I do have my concerns with electronic cigarettes. Part of the habit is the enjoyment of putting a round stick in your mouth and puffing it. That is half the battle next to the actual nicotine addiction for me so I really don't think electronic cigarettes would help me quit.

Uh you said put round stick in your mouth and puff it. YouTube - Beavis and Buttheads laugh

I smoke, I love it. E cigs do look pretty cool though, and I've been thinking about buying one for fun. I'd be interested to see what it is like. I do not think however, they are an effective anti smoking treatment.

I get the feeling that these devices are generally not sold to those that want to quit. They are sold to smokers that want to smoke where smoking is not allowed.

Here in Utah, they are looking at banning them alltogether.

I bought the Vapor King e-cig. I don't find it as satisfying as an 'analog' cig; but I guess it helps with the psychosomatic cravings associated with smoking. The e-cigs aren't as expensive as they used to be, so I think it is worth a try.

i quit for 6 months after a flu once. i am currently 3 months smoke free cold turkey and it seems to be working for me(it's all about willpower).

e-cigs are just a different delivery method for nicotine so it's not like your giving up on your addiction.

The e-cig is DEFINITELY working for me. I was a casual smoker (weekends only) for a long time. Then a year ago I started smoking daily. The last 8 months I was on a SOLID pack a day habit. No, that's not the same as someone doing 3 packs a day for 20 years, but still, a pack a day every single day for more than half a year is significant.

3 weeks ago I started developing a nasty hacking cough. I knew it was time to do something about it. I bought an e-cigarette that same day and it came in the mail 2 days later.

I have been using it for a little over 2 weeks and in that time I have only smoked about a single pack and all of those were bummed from other people. I have not paid for a cigarette in all that time and now I go multiple days in a row without a real smoke. the $60 I spent on the gadget has already paid for itself. My cough is now almost totally gone and I feel TONS better. Going to start working out again this coming week, in fact.

Everyone is different of course, but IMO the e-cig can definitely work. You do have to want to quit and make other lifestyle changes but these things absolutely can help.

Even if I end up using this thing for the rest of my life, and even though it is too new to have been fully studied, it absolutely has to be better than smoking a pack a day. In fact, lately, real cigs are starting to taste a little harsh and its a bit of an effort to actually finish one. That has to be a good thing.

This is true, but they can also help smokers quit. The nicotine liquid that goes in the e-cig is sold in various strengths, including 0 nicotine. The higher nicotine concentrations has a better "throat hit" sensation which appeals to regular smokers. From there, it's relatively easy to decrease the amount of nicotine you put into the e-cig. And, you obviously get the same hand-to-mouth habit.

It doesn't make much sense for any place to ban these. They're safer than cigarettes, & they produce absolutely no second-hand smoke. The only thing I can think of is pocket grease from tobacco manufacturers.

I didnt smoke, but dipped, e.g. chewing tobacco like skoal/grizzly/smokeless tobacco, for close to 5 years. the way i quit, just stopped one day. got to the point of it was more of a habit more than anything and developed the willpower to give it up. do i still have the habit in a way yes and no. i still do crave some cigars every now and then.

I went from a pack every 2 days to a pack every 2 weeks. I use the ecig from smoketips.com. its simple, 2 pieces and has a lifetime warranty. i love it but its obviously not for everyone. i had been smoking for 2-3 years and i feel i could stop if i wanted(dont have ecig battery at home). my parents on the other hand have smoked for 20+ years and they use the ecig to cut down but they still smoke a lot.

check out the ecig forums, buy a used lot cheap and see if you like it

I do not think the e-cig helps you quit. The habit is still there as is the nicotine. These devices are an excuse to "smoke" more, and in places that cigarettes are not allowed.

If you want to smoke, use it. If you want to quit, stop the negative enforcement and rid yourself of the entire habit. Get that *** out of your mouth.

I guess it's all how you define "quit." I'm defining it as quitting smoking regular cigarettes. When you use an e-cig, yes the ACT of smoking is still there, but e-cigs do not produce actual smoke. There is no combustion. The battery heats an atomizer which heats the liquid which produces vapor that you breathe in. For me, I have successfully cut down on he amount of "real" cigarettes I smoke. Additionally, I've been able to lower the amount of nicotine I put In the e-cig.

Do I want to totally quit the e-cig now that I've pretty much quit smoking real cigs? No. I still enjoy the e-cig. But I can sure tell a difference in my health since I've started using the e-cig the majority of the time.
