R.I.P. Samsung permanently stops Galaxy Note 7 production.

Soooooo.....

I guess this means we shouldn't bother to wonder about when we might get Android N on our Note 7's?

Will never happen. Frankly I think there could only ever be one more update for the thing, a forced mandatory update to neutralise and probably brick the remaining ones out there for any stubborn and IMO irresponsible and reckless hold outs, by disabling charging completely, locking in airplane mode, IMEI deletion, or something. That, and the carriers could very well IMEI blacklist them as well, stop them being used on their networks. In fact there was something about Verizon doing it after 45 days I think it was, as well as blocking the phone numbers associated with them.

My question still remains, are they not afraid of competition from Apple?

Or even from other Android manufacturers, including Google? The majority of customers stick with one platform or another these days.

Apparently, in urban areas of the US, carriers are reporting large percentage of returning Note 7 owners getting iPhones. For some, the number is well over 50% (this is mostly in San Francisco, Apple's home court), but it is quite high in other cities as well.

The brand is severely tarnished, for a very long time. I decided to ask around my office (people who have no connection with IT in their daily work) if anyone had heard of the Galaxy Note 7 recall. They were all vaguely familiar, they heard stories about fires and the most common response was "Yes, I heard, this is about the Samsung cellphones exploding. I can't imagine anyone buying a Samsung phone after this". The distinction between the main brand (Samsung), its mobile brand (Galaxy) and its model brand (Note) bears no difference for ordinary people. For them, Samsung name has now been permanently associated with exploding phones.
