Random J3 notifications

I have an older J3. The notification sound rarely works when I am receiving normal SMS texts. I reset the notification sound occasionally, but his does not seem to help.
The sound works at times, but only very randomly. I have to tell friends to call rather than text if they need to contact me immediately. Is this a common problem?

your phone is over 4 years old. most phones last about that long......so yeah things like this could happen. have you tried rebooting the phone? maybe try the phone in safe mode and see if it still happens. and your last resort would be to do a factory reset.
